PI Wildcats split with Broncs

PRESQUE ISLE – Adam Swanson’s RBI groundout and R.J. Gagnon’s RBI single scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and Presque Isle held on the rest of the way to earn a 5-3 victory Monday over the Broncos in the second game of a high school baseball doubleheader.

Hampden won the opener 6-0.

In the first game, Pat Moran fired a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks as the Broncos shut down the Wildcats. Chris Pease drove in three runs on two doubles.

Matt Carvell hit a double for Presque Isle.

In the second game, Matt Carvell added an RBI double and Gagnon finished with two singles for Presque Isle. Gagnon also scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Kevin Brooks and Billy Shannon each doubled and singled for the Broncos. Kyle Dalton hit an RBI single.

At Searsport, Matt Nickerson smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to help power the Vikings.

Matt Mercer added an RBI single for Searsport. Nick Dakin and Spencer Garton combined to limit the Red Devils to four hits while striking out five and walking none.

James Gray’s RBI triple in the first drove in Joey Kane, who singled.

At Calais, Jon King singled to start the eighth, moved to second and third on two passed balls, and then scored the winning run for Calais on Russ McLean’s RBI groundout.

Freshman Nick Reynolds paced the Blue Devils with two doubles and two RBIs. Nick Seelye had a double, a single and an RBI. King had two singles and an RBI. Scott Macdonald allowed seven hits and one walk while notching 14 strikeouts.

Josh Francis singled twice while Derek Maloney had an RBI double for the Tigers of Eastport.

DI-Stonington sweeps J-B Royals

At Jonesport, Joe Trundy’s RBI double and Evan Haskell’s two-run single helped the Mariners rally in the eighth inning and go on to an 11-7 win over the Royals in the first game of a doubleheader. DI-Stonington won the second game 7-4.

In the first game, Jeff Douglass singled twice and Haskell finished with two singles and three RBIs. Jon Klemenz tripled and singled.

Jared Alley hit an RBI double for Jonesport-Beals. Matthew Merchant singled twice and Timothy Holmes doubled.

In the second game, Tim Robbins hit two singles and drove in two runs for the Mariners. Nick Ciomei recorded an RBI double, Josh Eaton had an RBI single and Douglass singled twice.

Jonesport-Beals’ Derrick Beal doubled twice and knocked in a run. Matthew Merchant doubled, singled, and had two RBIs.

At Blue Hill, Chris Sargent hit a two-run single and pitched a one-run, three-hit game to lead GSA to the win.

Colin Henry added an RBI single for the Eagles.

Nick Simon led Stearns of Millinocket with an RBI single.

Softball

Hampden sweeps Presque Isle

At Presque Isle, Ashlea Ireland led the visiting Broncos with her pitching arm in the first game and her bat in the second as Hampden Academy swept the Wildcats in a Monday doubleheader.

In the second game, Ireland’s RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning gave Hampden a 5-4 victory.

Kristin Littlefield led Hampden offensively with two singles and two runs.

Katie DeLong paced Presque Isle with three singles. Danielle Dyer had two singles and two RBIs while Marigan Bishop added two singles.

In the first game, Ireland allowed eight hits in seven innings to notch the win.

Littlefield and Cheryl Morris each hit RBI singles.

Shawna Nadeau had an RBI single.

Royalettes, Mariners split

At Jonesport, Deer Isle-Stonington scored 11 runs in the first inning and went on to a 26-9 win over Jonesport-Beals in the second game of a doubleheader. The Royalettes knocked off the Mariners 13-9 in the first game.

In the second game, the Mariners mixed timely hitting with J-B walks to jump out to the big lead.

Lacy Greenlaw had four singles and two RBIs, Heather Bray drove in two runs with two singles, and Meghan Wiberg doubled for Deer Isle-Stonington.

Jody Pinkham had a triple and a single and drove in two runs, Sarah Beal had three singles and a pair of RBIs, Naomi Chandler singled twice a and drove in a run, and Sara Hunkler singled twice for Jonesport Beals.

In the first game, Sara Hunkler, Corrie Hunkler and Ashton Smith had singles and two runs batted in apiece for the Royalettes.

Hollan Oliver had two singles, Greenlaw singled twice and Wiberg doubled and drove in two runs for the Mariners.

At Calais, Amanda Brown’s bases-loaded triple keyed a five-run second inning as the Blue Devils took control of their game with the Tigerettes.

Sarah Mahan singled twice with an RBI and Nikki Ellington singled twice for Calais.

Jamie Cassell had two singles and Britney Lingley drove in two runs with a single for Shead of Eastport.

Dayna Somers and Casey Popp each singled twice and Katie Jones had a triple for Stearns of Millinocket.
