DeFilipp shuts down Rams in Witches’ win

BANGOR – Brewer sophomore Sarah DeFilipp got two birthday presents Tuesday night.

The first – a line drive she took off her right leg in the fourth inning of the high school softball matchup against Bangor – will probably be a nasty bruise this morning.

The second was a little more to her liking.

DeFilipp, who turned 16, took a three-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning, and had the Witches’ typical combination of stellar defense and hitting behind her in a 5-1 victory at the Union Street Athletic Complex.

It was a key win for Brewer (13-2), which probably solidified third place in the Eastern Maine Class A Heal Point standings.

But the Witches didn’t need any other motivation than just the knowledge that it was the rival Rams, who go to 11-4.

“I don’t think Coach [Kelly Cookson] could have prepared us any better,” said second baseman Amy Freeman, who was a part of two Brewer double plays and singled twice. “Our intensity was a lot higher. You’ve just got to step it up for big games like this.”

Bangor freshman pitcher Kelly White looked strong early, with four strikeouts in the first two innings, but the top of Brewer’s lineup figured her out in the third.

Freeman singled to kick off a two-out rally and went to second when DeFilipp drew a walk. Carolyn McAvoy, who made two tough catches in the field as the shortstop, then doubled to bring in both runners.

“I went up there thinking I had to start something, just rip the ball,” Freeman said.

McAvoy came home on a Vanessa Michaud single and she would score on a double by Christine Thoms for a 4-0 lead.

Brewer added another run in the sixth as Emily McLaughlin doubled, advanced on a Rachel Wing groundout, and scored on an Anna Corey single.

“They hit the ball tonight and they hit it hard, even on the plays that we made,” Bangor coach Nancy Snowdeal said. “… It looked like they were hitting [White’s] riseball and they were timing it well. Timing-wise they had her down.”

DeFilipp struck out three, walked three and kept ahead of the Rams for much of the game. After the line drive hit her leg the Witches had a short conference, but there was no talk of DeFilipp retiring for the night.

“It stung a lot, but I didn’t feel it afterwards. We just had to regroup,” she said.

Both teams played sparkling defense. There was just one error in the game, but it didn’t figure in the scoring, and shortstop McAvoy caught two hard-to-get-to fly balls.

Bangor’s defense saved a run with a double play in the fourth inning. Brewer had a runner on third when first baseman Megan McCrum caught a fly ball for one out, and threw home to catcher Heidi Baker, who tagged out the runner.

The Rams scored in the bottom of the seventh as White drew a leadoff walk, went to third on Kate Turner single and scored on a Jenn Dall sacrifice bunt.

Bangor junior Stephanie Chase also had a birthday Tuesday. She turned 17.
