Young lifts Bangor by Brewer 1-0 Witches’ Gomm gets hard-luck loss to rival

BANGOR – “Butting heads.” It seems appropriate that Josh Young, the pitcher of a team whose mascot is a Ram, would use that term to describe what he and his opposing pitcher do.

That was Bangor pitcher Young’s thoughts of his outing Tuesday night at Mansfield Stadium against Brewer and Witches ace Chad Gomm.

The result was a predictable low-scoring affair with the Rams coming out a 1-0 winner in schoolboy baseball action for the second time this year over Gomm and the Witches.

Young and a couple of Brewer mistakes were the story as the Rams improved to 14-1 and the Witches slipped to 8-7.

Young allowed two first-inning singles and a fourth inning walk and nothing else. The junior righthander struck out 13.

Young also drove in the only run of the game when he plated pinch runner Aaron Gallant with a fourth-inning double. It was Young’s second hit of the game.

The hit was one of the three the lefthanded Gomm would give up on the night.

“I’ve seen Chad a bunch of times. It was just one of those nights where you need to [come through],” Young said.

The Witches’ only chance to score came in the first inning. Matt Sargent started things with a single to center field. He then stole second.

J.T. Davis was next and the junior put down an excellent sacrifice bunt. Young fielded the ball and threw to first baseman Mike Larochelle to get Davis. But Sargent rounded third base too far and Larochelle fired across the diamond to nail him before he could get back to the bag.

That was Brewer’s first mistake. The Witches second came in the fourth inning when an infield throwing error allowed Bangor’s Brian Hackett to reach second base. Gallant came in to run for Hackett and Young followed with a double to deep left center field to score Gallant. Gomm bore down and got the next two batters to end the inning.

Bangor didn’t get another base runner past second the rest of the way but one run was all Young would need.

“Bangor’s a great team. You make a mistake they’ll just jump on you and that’s what they did,” Gomm said.

Meanwhile, Young was mowing down the Witches. At one point the righthander struck out seven in a row, using a fastball that was clocked consistently at 85 and 86 mph and a sharp breaking curveball.

“My curveball starts coming around third or fourth inning. It starts coming around where I can hit my spots. I can throw it, they can hit it and my defense is behind me,” Young said.

When called upon, the Bangor defense was flawless but so dominating was Young that the Witches did not get the ball into the air for a single fly-ball out.

Gomm was also impressive. His only walk of the night was an intentional free pass to Young in the sixth inning after Jordan Heath had reached on a one-out single. The lefthander finished with three strikeouts.

“He pitched a great game. He always does. We usually come together and butt heads and it’s usually a 1-0, 2-0 game,” Young said.
