Paddlers to raise money for camp Gray wildlife park open house today

Two hundred paddlers will take to the Kennebec River on June 7 in support of Pine Tree Camp, a camp for Maine children and adults with disabilities.

The Paddle for Pine Tree Camp will span sections of the Kennebec River from Solon to Augusta. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Pine Tree Camp Campership Fund, ensuring that all campers, regardless of their ability to pay tuition, are able to attend the Rome-based camp this summer.

The Paddle for Pine Tree Camp began in 1997, after Darrell Buzzell of Kineo Kayak Guide Service in Skowhegan spent a day at the camp teaching campers how to kayak.

Participants will collect donations or pledges per mile for their trip down the Kennebec River, and will consist of four trips: Bingham to Solon, Solon to North Anson, Waterville to Sidney, and Sidney to Augusta.

The Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold their June monthly dinner meeting at the Veazie Salmon Club on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m.

The dinner will be a chicken, hot dog, and hamburger barbecue. Please bring salads or desserts for pot-luck, and the beverages of your choice.

The speakers will be biologists Paul Johnson and Matt Scott.

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, contact Don Corey at 843-5634 or don@annika.us.

Wildlife park holds open house

The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray will be holding a free open house today from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The open house provides an opportunity to take a closer look at the wildlife that makes Maine its home, and to learn more about the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

There will be special demonstrations, displays, and information on topics ranging from radio tracking wild animals to boating safety.

Roland “Danny” Martin, the DIF&W commissioner, will be on hand, as will several Maine game wardens.

The Maine Wildlife Park is located off Turnpike Exit 11 in Gray.

Outdoor author to speak

Maine author Kathy Scott and split cane fly rod maker David Van Burgel will host an event at Pittsfield Public Library to celebrate the release of her newest book, “Headwaters Fall as Snow.”

The presentation and book signing is set for June 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Scott and Van Burgel intertwine a love of nature and the handcrafting of split bamboo fly rods throughout their lives in Maine, Michigan, and the mountain west.

If you are curious about bamboo fly rods or just enjoy the wonderful places where anglers use them, you may want to attend.

Ancient Ones plan event

The Ancient Ones will host their fourth annual Any Muzzleloader Shoot in Canton on June 14.

This year’s theme is “food” and “food preparation,” and targets will reflect that theme.

The range will include a pastry shoot – a Twinkie at 25 yards – and the woods walk will include targets pertaining to food preparation, procurement, and even doing the dishes.

All events start at 9 a.m. There will be a $5 entry fee for the entire shoot.
