University of Maine assistant hockey coach and recruiting coordinator Grant Standbrook is recuperating at Mercy Hospital in Portland after undergoing surgery to repair ruptured quadriceps tendons suffered in a fall on Sunday.
According to Standbrook’s wife, Joy, her husband underwent 31/2 hours of surgery Thursday night “to reattach the tendons” to his knees.
She said her husband fell down five steps at a rink in Hingham, Mass., where he was recruiting. He also injured his wrist trying to prevent the fall.
He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Quincy, Mass., and head coach Tim Whitehead eventually drove him home to Bangor.
Standbrook said her husband will remain at Mercy Hospital until Monday. She said the surgery was successful although her husband “is in a lot of pain.”
He will spend two weeks in bed but she said he should have a successful recovery.
However, it will be a while before he can pursue one of his favorite leisure activities: golf.
“He probably won’t be able to play until August,” said Joy.
Standbrook has been with the program for 15 years and has coached and recruited 27 Black Bear All-Americans.
He was a former head coach at Dartmouth College and assistant at the University of Wisconsin.
He has played an important role in five NCAA championships including two at Maine.
His record as an assistant coach at the two schools is 689-324-62.
Walsh Center architects named
The University of Maine announced the Bangor firm of WBRC Architects/Engineers, in partnership with Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Inc. in Kansas City, Mo., will be the lead architects for the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center at Alfond Arena.
The center is named after the former Bears hockey coach who died of complications from kidney cancer on Sept. 24, 2001.
The center, which will be located at the south end of Alfond Arena, will feature new lockerrooms for the men’s and women’s hockey programs, new office space for the coaches, meeting rooms and a central reception area.
Construction documents should be completed by October and construction will begin as soon as fund raising is completed and a contractor is selected through a bid process.
WBRC has worked with the university on several recent projects including the Buchanan Alumni House and the grandstand at the Harold Alfond Sports Stadium.
Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum, referred to as HOK, has an impressive list of credentials including Oriole Park at Camden Yards and San Francisco’s Pac Bell Park.
Husson golfer Pion honored
Senior Corey Pion of Vassalboro earned All-America honorable mention honors after the Husson College golf team completed an outstanding season with a 23rd-place finish last week at the NAIA National Golf Championships in Palm Coast, Fla.
In addition, senior Shane Ross of Pittsfield was named an All-American Scholar-Athlete.
The Braves’ three-day total was 940 at Matanzas Woods Golf Club, but they missed the cut, which took the top 17 of the 27 teams, by 18 strokes.
Corey Poulin, a junior from Jackman, shot rounds of 78-79-76 for a total of 17-over-par 233 and a tie for 77th place to lead the Braves. Pion and junior Joe Finemore of Sidney were two strokes back after rounds of 77-79-79 for Pion and 80-79-76 for Finemore.
Ross had 83-80-76-239, and freshman Ross McGee of Fairfield had rounds of 85-82-77. Team scores are determined by adding up the best four individual scores out of the five each day.
Oklahoma City University won the team championship, and OCU’s Nicolas Allain was the individual medalist at 69-71-71-71-282, 6 under par.
A two-year captain at Husson, Pion went to the national championships four times – three with the team and once as an individual.
