Viktoriya Rybalko took only one jump Saturday at the NCAA East Regional track and field meet at Fairfax, Va., but it was good enough to send her to the NCAA Championships.
The University of Maine senior star covered 6.53 meters (21 feet, 51/4 inches) on her initial leap of the day while winning the women’s long jump competition. The performance was only 11/2 inches shy of her school-record jump made in April at the Penn Relays.
Jumpers are allowed three attempts per round in the meet, but no other competitor was able to eclipse Rybalko’s standard. Gisele Oliveira of Clemson placed second at 20-9.
Rybalko, a native of Zaporzhye, Ukraine, has earned the right to compete in the NCAA Championships June 11-14 at Sacramento, Calif.
The Black Bears sent three other athletes to the East Regional. Amelia Williams finished 12th in the javelin with a throw of 43.11 meters (141-5).
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Mike Lansing of Lovell finished 23rd with a time of 9 minutes, 21.24 seconds. Jesse Ludwig of South Portland wound up 27th in the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.47 meters (21-23/4).
Colby crew wins national title
Colby College in Waterville captured its first national championship in any sport Saturday when it won the NCAA Division III women’s crew title at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
Coach Stew Stokes’ White Mules won the Grand Final and their “B” boat took third in the Petite Final to score 10 points, two better than second-place University of Puget Sound.
Colby, which was the Division III national runner-up a year ago, led Ithaca in the six-boat Grand Final by more than a second at the 1,000-meter mark and held a four-second edge over Puget Sound at 1,500 meters.
The Mules pulled away by more than five seconds.
Colby’s varsity crew included coxswain Vivienne Ho, Leah Hagamen, Emily Allen, Laura Mistretta, Annie Szender, Leah Robertson, Andrea Piekarski, Megan Loosigian, and Ellie Boyce.
Members of the “B” boat were coxswain Becca Reisman, Katie O’Neill, Caitlin Chamberlin, Caroline Andresen, Cameron Fisher, Sarah Dunham, Liz Johnson, Liz Shepherd, and Liz Curran.
