GLENBURN – Kaylee Caruso, a seventh-grader at Glenburn Middle School, had a great idea. She thought the school’s Civil Rights Team should do something to show support for America’s troops in Iraq. She asked her grandmother Cynthia Knowles to donate a handmade quilt for the team to raffle.

The teams decided to use the money they raised for USO Care Packages. They set a goal of $100, enough to purchase four care packages, and set to work selling red, white and blue raffle tickets. At the end of three weeks, team members had raised $330, enough for more than 13 care packages.

Justin Edgar and Caruso came up with a plan to show thanks for community support for the project. With their math teacher, Melanie Landry, they made plans to form raffle tickets into a an American flag with USO in silver stars on a blue field.

The project is one of several the team has undertaken this year in an effort to make a difference in their school, community and country.
