BANGOR – The River City Concert Series will present the River City Salon Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Union Street Brick Church.
The River City Salon Orchestra is a 10-piece ensemble, a “small orchestra” of the type that performed in hotels, music halls, on ships and in concert halls in the early 20th century. The repertoire runs from classical “hits” of the day to Tin Pan Alley popular songs to early jazz classics. The River City Salon Orchestra members are familiar faces to music patrons in the Bangor area. They play in a variety of ensembles, both large and small.
The program will feature American popular music from 1890 to 1940, including works by the great names of American music – Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Scott Joplin and W.C. Handy.
Songs will include “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Maple Leaf Rag,” “Yankee Doodle Boy,” “My Blue Heaven,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Toot! Toot! Tootsie, Goodbye!” and “Carolina in the Morning.”
Admission is $5, $4 for seniors and students. Children under age 12 are admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door. To obtain information, call 825-3782 or visit www.rivertownmusic.com.
