Brewer High School

BREWER – Brandon Libby, a junior at Brewer High School, is the recipient of a $2,500 Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship. He was one of six Maine students selected, chosen from a pool of more than 8,000 applicants nationwide. He is eligible to compete for nine $25,000 national scholarships.

The Maine School Superintendents Association coordinated the state panel of judges who based winner selection on information from application materials submitted by each student.

Libby also was one of six teenagers to receive the 2003 Teens Who Care Award in April in Portland.

Hampden Academy

HAMPDEN – Gifford Stevens will retire from Hampden Academy at the close of the school year. He has been an English teacher at the academy since 1980. He taught a variety of English courses including advanced placement literature, interdisciplinary American studies, folklore and outdoor life. He also contributed to the enrichment of students’ education by teaching them to make dulcimers, taking them on whitewater and camping trips, organizing a folk singing group and supervising the weight room.

Orono Middle School

ORONO – Pupils Jessica Bates and Mike Zhang were honored at the fourth annual Middle Level Scholar Leader Awards banquet May 28 at the Augusta Civic Center. They were among 73 eighth-grade students from 37 schools who received awards.

Bates and Zhang had to demonstrate academic initiative and scholarship, provide service to classmates and school, exemplify positive attitudes and demonstrate leadership in the classroom and in school activities.

SAD 22

HAMPDEN – Weatherbee School teacher Susan O’Brien and Reeds Brook School teacher Sharyn Hastings have been awarded overseas study grants by the Fulbright Memorial Fund, a cooperative program supported by the governments of the United States and Japan.

The fund provides selected American primary and secondary school teachers and administrators with opportunities for professional development through study visits to Japan.

The program is designed to provide educators opportunities to experience Japanese culture and education through school visits, interactions with teachers and students, seminars and home stays.

O’Brien and Hastings will visit Japan Oct. 6-23. When they return, they will share their experiences with students, teaching colleagues and communities.

Food service award

HAMPDEN – School Nutrition Director Christine Greenier was recognized recently by the Maine School Food Service Association with the Award for Excellence.

Greenier is a member of the School Health Council, which promotes healthy behaviors for students and staff, and works to enhance quality nutrition programs. She has incorporated education information in parent newsletters and uses “Go, Slow, Whoa” as an educational tool in SAD 22 cafeterias. She has provided impetus for the creation of nutritional advisory councils in the district’s middle and high schools. The student governed councils participate in activities to promote healthy eating.

Colleges

Amherst College

AMHERST, Mass. – Sara Edelston graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in American studies. A graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, she is the daughter of Clarissa Edelston of Hampden and A. Kenneth Edelston and Mallery Dalto of Monroe.

Boston College

BOSTON – Andrea Stairs, a doctoral student and teaching fellow at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, is the recipient of a Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award.

Stairs was recognized at a ceremony in May for her work preparing secondary school teachers for the urban context. She designed an innovative, collaborative program for urban teacher education, the first of its kind at the university. The program is now a requirement for all students in secondary education at Boston College. Stairs graduated from Hampden Academy and Colby College. She is the daughter of Robert and Shirley Stairs of Hampden.

EMTC

BANGOR – Jeremy Jacobs of Winterport was awarded the 2003 WBRC Architects-Engineers Scholarship to pursue an education in computer-aided drafting technology.

Emerson College

BOSTON – Katie Brydon has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Emerson College. She is a 2002 graduate of Hampden Academy.

Haverford College

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Jeremy Amar-Dolan received a bachelor’s degree in physics at Haverford College May 18. He is the son of Dr. Mary Dolan of Old Town and Dr. Francois Amar of Orono.

Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Anthony Clukey received a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University on May 24. He is the son of Scott and Cheryl Clukey of Winterport. He is working as a supervising chef at the Windward Restaurant in Newport, R.I.

Rivier College

NASHUA, N.H. – Kathleen West of Hermon and Kimberly Bragg of Veazie have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Rivier College.

Stonehill College

EASTON, Mass. – Katherine Ziemer of Holden, Laura Harburger of Brewer and Jocelyn Pinkney of Bangor have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Stonehill College.

Tufts University

MEDORD, Mass. – Ian Edward Cohen, son of Ruth-Ellen and Barry Cohen of Bangor, received a master of science degree in engineering from Tufts University on May 18. He is a graduate of Bangor High School.

University of Maine

ORONO – Valedictorians Andrew Goupee of Orrington, Kristen McGregor of South Berwick, Katie Nadeau of Madawaska and Jessica Shelton of Berwick, and salutatorians Heidi Crosby of Orono, Steven Fellows of Rockland, Lisa Johnson of Windham and Amanda Reynolds of Searsport were publicly recognized at University of Maine graduation ceremonies May 17. They were seated on the stage and each was introduced by UMaine President Peter Hoff, who presided at the ceremony.

Goupee was named the Outstanding Graduating Student in the university’s college of engineering. McGregor worked in UMaine’s new media services program and played clarinet in the symphonic band.

Nadeau is the winner of the Bickford Prize as the outstanding student in the college of natural sciences, forestry and agriculture.

Sheldon was a student in the university’s honors college and worked as a tutor in math and life sciences courses.

Crosby was an honors college student and a resident assistant at Colvin Hall. Fellows served two years as president of UMaine’s student investment portfolio management program and was an honors college student.

Johnson served as an officer in UMaine’s International Affairs Association and was a delegate to the Student Conference on United States Affairs at West Point.

Reynolds is the recipient of the college of liberal arts and sciences’ Dean’s Award for Research and Creative Achievement.

University of Maine at Farmington

FARMINGTON – Erin Campbell of Hampden is one of the recipients of the UMF Alumni Scholarships. The award is based on academic excellence, character and leadership ability.

University of New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H – Jennifer Gray of Holden received a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. She is the daughter of Linda Gray of Holden and Scott Gray of Eddington.

Robin Kapler, the daughter of Robin and George Kapler of Newburgh, received a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of New Hampshire.

Nicholas Bridges, the son of Brent and Suzanne Bridges of Hampden, received a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire.
