I have been reading with interest and dismay some of the justifications for supporting casino gambling in Maine, and racino gambling in Bangor, in particular. The one that takes the cake was reiterated in the Bangor Daily News feature on June 3 titled, “Changing Fortunes.” A Portland resident who travels to Foxwoods to gamble says: “They’re already in the business…” citing the millions Mainers spend every year on state-run games including Pick 3, Pick 4, Megabucks, Cash Lotto and scratch tickets.
Picking up a lottery ticket at a convenience store while buying a six-pack or loaf of bread is very different from directing residents and nonresidents alike to a “Temple of Gambling” replete with fountains, altars and statues. Is this really what we want at the center of our community? Not only would we be further legitimizing gambling, but worshiping it. Surely there’s a better way. Vote no on June 10.
