Husson’s Creek wins academic honor Reserve leaves UM women’s hoop team

Tony Creek, who recently graduated from Husson College in Bangor, has been named an NAIA Academic All-American for his work in the classroom.

Creek, a native of Chelsea, earned a master of science in business and a bachelor of science in accounting from Husson last month, graduating with a 3.78 grade point average.

Creek is the eighth player in 15 years to earn the honor.

“It is the statistic I am most proud of,” said Husson baseball coach John Kolasinski.

Creek, the son of Terry and Trina Creek, was a first baseman and designated hitter for the Braves, who advanced to the Sunrise Conference championship round before losing to Thomas College of Waterville.

“This is another great honor for Tony,” Kolasinski said. “He was a solid player for us and a solid citizen for the Husson community.”

Creek is the older brother of University of Maine pitcher and first baseman Greg Creek.

Husson soccer lists recruits

The Husson College women’s soccer team, which moves into the North Atlantic Conference in the fall, will embark on its new schedule with several new faces.

Coach Keith Bosley has announced that nine freshmen will join the Braves when the season starts in September. Bosley welcomes several players who should be familiar to fans in eastern and northern Maine.

“We not only have great numbers, but also exceptional students and athletes,” Bosley said. “These freshmen are going to make an impact.”

Husson has added two goalkeepers in Leah Drew of Caribou and Hampden’s Gabby Schrage. On defense, Brandi Crandall of Oakfield and Shaina Goode of Bucksport are the newcomers.

Freshman midfielders include Tawnya Crosby of Stetson and Andrea Taylor of Dover-Foxcroft, along with Kaylin Caron of Sandown, N.H. Up front, the Braves should receive a boost from Danielle Billings of Hampden and Jessie Wiggins of Hermon.

Also joining the team are sophomores Autumn Tuttle of Presque Isle, who took last season off to concentrate on her academics, and May Chan, an all-state defender from Ellsworth who transferred from Western New England College.

Hickman leaves UMaine squad

Kara Hickman, a reserve guard as a freshman last season for the University of Maine women’s basketball team, has left the school and the team.

“I love everything about the University of Maine: the people, the coaching staff and my teammates,” Hickman said in a release. “It was a tough decision to make, but for personal reasons I am choosing to go back home.”

Hickman, a left-handed shooter from Huntingdon, Md., played in 16 games for coach Sharon Versyp and averaged 0.9 points per contest.

“We will miss Kara deeply,” Versyp said. “I hope she will be successful in her future plans.”

America East needs baseball site

America East appears to be back in the market for a host site for the 2004 baseball championship tournament.

The conference had planned to hold the event at a municipal stadium in Albany, N.Y., but the facility has been sold and apparently cannot be used for the tournament.

The choices include playing at the home field of an America East team or possibly finding a minor league ballpark as a neutral site. UMaine and Vermont have the only two fields with lights, making them the only choices for campus sites.

There are several possibilities for neutral sites. The options are expected to be considered by the America East Championships Committee later this month.

St. Joseph’s names soccer coaches

Saint Joseph’s College in Standish has announced Christopher Parsons and Joseph Fogg have been named co-coaches of the Monks men’s soccer program.

The men played together at Thomas College in Waterville and later coached together at Notre Dame College (N.H.). Parsons and Fogg replace Bob Bourget, who resigned in January after six seasons directing Saint Joseph’s.

Parsons coached at Notre Dame College from 1999 to 2002 while Fogg, a Gorham native, headed the program at Daniel Webster College (N.H.) from 2001 to 2003.

Parsons’ team was ranked No. 18 in NAIA Division II in 2000 and was No. 1 in the Northeast Region in 2001 and ’02. He played at Thomas College in 1995 and ’96 and was an All-America and all-conference selection.

Fogg helped Daniel Webster go 12-19-3 the past two seasons after inheriting a 2-16 club in 2001.
