LEWISTON – Lewiston High School became the latest team to frustrate Deering of Portland’s boys tennis program as the Blue Devils capped a 16-0 season with a 4-1 Class A state championship match victory over the Rams Saturday at Bates College.
It was the first state crown for the Devils since 1995. Four-time defending Western Maine champ Deering has now lost two straight state finals by 3-2 scores after winning it all in 2000 and 2001.
In girls action, the Kennebunk Rams concluded a 16-0 season in grand style by winning their first-ever state tennis title with a 3-2 decision over two-time defending state champ Lewiston.
