Panthers avenge loss, advance

DYER BROOK – A two-run double by Eric Martinez with two outs in the fifth inning proved to be the decisive hit as the Central Aroostook Panthers of Mars Hill avenged an extra-inning regular season loss to the Southern Aroostook Warriors with a 6-4 victory in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class D baseball semifinal.

Central Aroostook will take on Shead of Eastport in a 7 p.m. Tuesday title game at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Martinez led No. 3 Central with a double and a single. Brian Grew hit a two-run home run in the first and Brendan Hallett singled twice.

For No. 2 Southern Aroostook, Evan McGary had a double, single and two RBIs. Griffin Hardy doubled. The Warriors left 12 runners on base as CAHS starter Andrew York worked out of several jams.

At Eastport, senior righthander Ben Maloney allowed only three hits while striking out eight and walking three to lift No. 1 Shead by No. 4 Lee.

Darren Constant slammed a two-run double in the fourth to spark Shead. Derek Maloney put the first run on the board with an RBI single and Jason Bones chipped in with an RBI double.

Nate Dow singled and doubled for Lee and Zac Currie doubled. Jerry Worster added a sacrifice fly.

Mount Ararat 3, Bangor 0

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, junior right-hander Mark Rogers struck out 13 and walked just two as No. 4 Mount Ararat of Topsham eliminated Bangor 3-0 in an Eastern Maine Class A semifinal Saturday.

Mount Ararat will play No. 3 Oxford Hills of South Paris in the Eastern Maine final at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mansfield Stadium. Oxford Hills defeated No. 2 Cony 3-1 on Saturday.

Rogers yielded just four hits in outdueling Bangor’s Josh Heath, who also pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Mount Ararat scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the scoreless tie. With one out, Ryan Doughty and Rogers hit back-to-back singles. An infield error allowed one run to score, and Chris Doherty later hit an RBI single that was bobbled in the outfield, allowing the final run of the inning to score.

Bangor did mount some threats against Rogers, as five Rams reached second base, including Jordan Heath, who doubled off the Mount Ararat standout with one out in the bottom of the first inning.

Doughty was the game’s lone repeat hitter with a pair of singles.

Foxcroft 4, Winslow 3

At Dover-Foxcroft, Danny White scored on Jason Weymouth’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift No. 2 Foxcroft to a 4-3 Eastern B semifinal victory over No. 3 Winslow.

The victory advances Foxcroft to the Eastern Maine final against No. 1 Bucksport at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Foxcroft trailed 3-2 after Winslow scored twice in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Brandon Croan doubled and pinch-runner Mitch Sawyer scored on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Annis.

In the seventh, White hit a leadoff single, went to second base on an error and to third base on a bunt single by Matt Carey. After Josh Withee was issued an intentional walk to load the base, White scored when Weymouth flied out to medium centerfield.

Weymouth also had a double and single in addition to his sacrifice fly, while Croan doubled and singled, and Adam Conway had an RBI single.

Withee pitched a complete-game six-hitter for the victory, with nine strikeouts and just one walk. Winslow reliever Taylor Helberg took the loss.

George Stevens 3, Dexter 2

At Blue Hill, top-ranked George Stevens Academy managed just three hits off Dexter pitcher Eric Day, but they all came during a three-run rally in the bottom of the first inning that lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over the No. 4 Tigers in an Eastern C semifinal.

GSA will play the winner of Monday’s semifinal between Stearns and Mattanawcook Academy in the regional final at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Bangor.

Mike Astbury drew a leadoff walk in the GSA first, and singles by Nick Henry and Mark Clapp loaded the bases with no one out. An Adam Cousins sacrifice fly plated Astbury, and Henry and Clapp scored on a two-out single by Chris Candage.

GSA senior right-hander Chris Sargent took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Kyle Morrison singled.

Dexter closed to within 3-1 on a solo home run by Adam Russell in the sixth inning. The Tigers added their second run an inning later when Morrison hit a two-out single, went to second base on a passed ball and scored on a single by Sam Bowers.

Sargent pitched a complete-game four-hitter for GSA, striking out eight batters while walking one with one hit batsman.

At Lincoln, Wayne Berry scattered four hits, struck out nine and didn’t give up any walks as the No. 2 Lynx shut out the No. 10 Knights in a quarterfinal.

Tyler Libbey singled twice and drove in two runs for Mattanawcook. Nathan Cousineau hit three singles and added an RBI. Matt Malone and Dylan Hanscom each singled twice and Malone drove in a run.

Joe Leighton paced Narraguagus of Harrington with two singles.

Brewer 7, Messalonskee 2

At Brewer, Sarah DeFilipp improved to 12-1 on the mound by throwing a six-hitter with one strikeout and no walks.

Brewer’s sophomore hurler also starred at the plate as she had two singles and two RBIs.

Second-seeded Brewer will next take on top seed Leavitt of Turner, which knocked off No. 4 Cony of Augusta 5-3. The first-ever meeting of the two teams takes place Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Brewer’s Coffin Field.

The Witches’ big inning came in the sixth as they scored four runs – all with two outs. Anna Corey’s one-out double started things off and Kate Hanlon got her second single of the game with a bunt. Corey stole second and one out later, DeFillip hit a two-run single, Carolyn McAvoy hit an RBI triple, and Kate Thomas had an RBI double.

Thoms also had an RBI single for the Witches, who started slowly against No. 3 Messalonskee of Oakland.

“Once we laid off the riseball, we executed much better,” said Brewer coach Kelly Cookson.

Bucksport 3, John Bapst 0

At Bucksport, the host Golden Bucks scored three runs in the first and Nicole Smith made them stand up by pitching a six-hit shutout.

The Bucks did all their offensive damage early as Jessica Taylor and Alice Andrews singled to lead off, Terra Tweedie hit a one-out squeeze bunt single to score Taylor, and Ashley McAllian hit a two-run single to right with two outs. Smith (15-1) had five strikeouts and no walks.

Kim Meagher and Heather Laferriere each hit two singles for the Crusaders. Jill Mitchell added a double.

At Winslow, the host Black Raiders rode a seven-run first inning to a regional semifinal victory.

Three errors, a wild pitch, and two hits helped the Black Raiders score six unearned runs in the first.

Beth LaFountain notched the complete-game victory for Winslow.

For the Lions, Danielle Mayer hit a two-run double.

Class C

Dexter 14, Mattanawcook 2

At Dexter, Brittany Veazie had two singles during an eight-run first-inning rally that lifted No. 1 Dexter to a 14-2 victory over No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy in an Eastern C semifinal Saturday.

Veazie led off the inning with a bunt single, and later had an RBI single as the Tigers took an 8-1 lead. Cincy Koscielny, Nikki Chapman and Sabrina Cote also had RBI singles during the uprising.

The Tigers then added six runs in the bottom of the second inning. The game was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Mattanawcook had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Erica Knights singled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Pietras.

Cote led Dexter’s 12-hit attack with three singles and three RBI. Koscielny and Veazie each added two hits, while Sarah Carnes had a two-run single.

Carnes also was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits while striking out seven and walking four.

Knights had two singles for Mattanawcook.

At Corinth, Shawna Smith allowed four hits and two walks while notching seven strikeouts to improve her record to 15-1 and lead the Central Red Devils to the semifinal playoff win.

Jenny Rollins led the Devils offensively with a leadoff homer in the first, two singles and three total RBIs. Lindsay Mitchell had a double, single and one RBI while Jody Harvey singled twice. Renee Trafton had a double and three RBIs and Shawna Bell had a double and two RBIs.

Sharelle Dwyer hit a triple and a single to lead the Hawks.

Lee Academy 5, Limestone 4

At Lee, junior infielder Kristin Hersom was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and a single to lead the No. 3 Lee Pandas into the Eastern Maine finals.

Hersom hit a two-run homer in the third and with two outs in the sixth, drilled another two-run shot that scored what proved to be the winning run. Michaela Ham hit three singles and Ashlee Gifford added two singles plus an RBI for the defending EM champs. Marci Moors (13-5) notched the complete-game victory.

Ashley Brooker and Ashley Posey each singled twice for the No. 7 Eagles. Allison Benton hit a two-run single.

Bangor Christian 5, Ashland 1

At Ashland, winning pitcher Cara Hartman struck out eight batters and had three singles of her own as No. 4 Bangor Christian upset top-ranked Ashland in an Eastern D softball semifinal.

Ashland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ashley Nemer walked, stole second and third bases and scored on a fielder’s choice by Cora Campbell.

Bangor Christian then took the lead for good by scoring three runs without benefit of a hit in the top of the third inning.

Pam Spooner, who struck out 12 batters for Ashland, also doubled and singled at the plate, while Campbell added a double for the Hornets.
