SANGERVILLE – More than 40 young adults were summonsed and two adults were arrested on alcohol-related charges after police interrupted a party early Saturday morning on Gray Road.
Twelve deputies from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department and a state trooper crashed a party at the home of Donna Cookson at 12:30 a.m.
They found about 100 young adults, some whom had passed out from intoxication, according to Lt. Robert Young of the Sheriff’s Department.
Cookson, 43, was arrested and charged with furnishing a place for minors to drink. Also arrested was Bobby Durate, 21, of Sangerville, who was charged with furnishing liquor to minors. Both were released from Piscataquis County Jail on personal recognizance bail of $40. They will make their initial court appearance on June 14 in Dover-Foxcroft District Court.
Armed with information that a large party was going to be held Friday night in the Sangerville area, deputies were out in force checking various locations, Young said.
The extra support for the effort was funded through a two-year federal grant of $72,000 designed to stop underage drinking.
“We’ve been really trying to make a dent in the incidents of juvenile drinking,” Young said Saturday.
He said parents of the children found at the party were called. The department’s policy is to notify parents of children under the age 18 even if the youths were not drinking, he said. For those 18 years of age and older, Young said efforts were made to find them rides home, either with parents or friends.
Young said some of the young adults were charged with illegal possession of alcohol, while a few others were charged with furnishing liquor.
