Machias Memorial High School

MACHIAS – Principal Timothy Reynolds has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2003 at Machias Memorial High School.

Katrina Holley Rudd, daughter of Paul and Christine Rudd of Marshfield, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2003. She will attend the University of Rochester in New York.

She was selected for membership in the National Honor Society as a junior. She has been a member of the math team and participated in model state, Close Up in Washington, mock trial and band for four years, and she has served as vice president and section leader in band. She has been elected this year as senior class secretary and has volunteered her time as a mentor for the Big Brother-Big Sister program. She has been a tri-sport athlete all four years, participating on the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. She served as captain or co-captain for all three sports and as a junior was named to the All State Second Team in volleyball. Last year she was awarded the Bridgham Award for excellence as a student athlete.

She has received the Seven Sisters Book Award and the Maine Scholars Achievement Award. She has been on the highest academic honors all four years, earned highest averages in numerous classes, including advanced placement and honors courses. She was selected for several outstanding student awards. She has been named as a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Lindsey Elizabeth Cherry, daughter of James and Jean Cherry of Machias, has been named co-salutatorian for the Class of 2003. She will attend the University of Connecticut, with a major in pharmaceutical studies.

She has earned highest academic honors all four years, received the Maine Scholars Achievement Award, and was selected to membership in the National Honor Society as a junior. She has been a member of the Union 102 design team and government club, and attended the 2002 Close Up Foundation Seminar in Washington, D.C. She also participated on the math team and mock trial team.

She volunteered as a mentor for the Big Brother-Big Sister program and for the Sunrise County Workshop, was a member of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, and was recognized as a Downeast Athletic Conference softball all-star.

Amanda Kate Thibodeau, daughter of Dave and Marianne Thibodeau of Marshfield, has been named co-salutatorian for the Class of 2003. She will attend the University of Maine and has been accepted into the honors college. She will pursue studies designed to lead to her acceptance into medical school.

She received the Maine Scholars Achievement award, the Williams College Book Award, and numerous academic awards for outstanding achievements in her courses. She was selected to membership in the National Honor Society as a junior and serves as the vice president. She has been a four-year member of the math team, government club, and the Bulldog Productions Video Club. She served as captain of the mock trial team and participated in Close Up in Washington, D.C.

She has been involved in volleyball, softball, baseball, cheering and basketball the past four years. She participated in the drama club, art club, pep band, and ski club. Her community service has included Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Washington County, Special Olympics volunteer, Red Cross blood drive volunteer, library assistant, and neighborhood beautification projects.
