Man in shower scares off burglar in Hampden

An intruder tried to break into a Hampden residence Monday morning, but ran away when the owner turned out to be in the shower.

Hampden police Officer Joel Small said a Dudley Street man told him he was in the shower at about 8:30 a.m. when he heard breaking glass. He found a window in his house broken, which someone had evidently reached through and opened from the outside before fleeing.

Small said it did look like an attempted break-in. He spoke with neighbors, but nobody had seen anything.

An Old Town man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly throwing rocks at playground equipment.

Old Town police Officer Christopher Hashey said he went to the newly renovated City Park in downtown Old Town at about 4:45 p.m. on a complaint that a group of young people were throwing rocks at the new equipment. Hashey warned them to stop and to leave the park for the night.

Hashey said he recognized one of the group as Justin Rouse, 18, who had been arrested a few times before by Old Town police. A few minutes later, Detective Mike Holmes told Hashey that Rouse had bail conditions not to leave his house.

Hashey went back to the area and found Rouse hiding in a nearby sandwich shop. He arrested him for violation of conditional release.

A pickup truck driver stole gas from a Bangor filling station for the fourth time Monday afternoon.

Bangor police Officer Kerry Libby said she went to the Main Street Irving filling station at 1:30 p.m. on a gas drive-off complaint. An employee told Libby a tan Ford Ranger pickup with an extended cab had driven off with $27.73 worth of gas. The employee couldn’t get the plate number because the plate was folded down, she told Libby, but said the driver was a man with a baseball cap.

The employee said this was the fourth time that truck had driven off without paying for gas. Libby told the employee to call police next time the truck came to the store.
