Senior center’s thrift shop needs volunteers

The thrift shop operated by Hammond Street Senior Center opens for the season at 10 a.m. Monday, June 16, at the former World Traders site on Route 1A in Holden.

Aunt Nellie’s Attic will remain open through mid-October, reports manager Heather Humbert.

Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the shop is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

“Last year, we raised more than $30,000, and we’re hoping to raise even more this year,” Humbert said.

The theme of Aunt Nellie’s Attic is “From Minks to Sinks,” and Humbert said the products are all of good quality with many new, as well as donated, items.

“Our party goods, for example, are new,” she said, “and we have movies, lamps and furniture.”

In fact, donations of resalable, nonclothing items are always welcome, she added.

All donations are tax-deductible to the donor, and all proceeds from the shop benefit the programs of HSSC, which serves more than 1,800 members in Greater Bangor.

However, to make this program really successful, a good, willing, volunteer work force is needed.

Staffed by volunteers from the senior population as well as local community members, Aunt Nellie’s Attic relies on you to help it serve the public and raise funds for HSSC, which is operated by the Couri Foundation. If you can help, call Humbert at 262-5532.

The public is invited to participate in a Mini Health Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Shaw’s Supermarket on Main Street in Bangor.

Providing free information for “Getting You On the Right Track to Health” will be representatives of the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, the Bangor Fire Department’s helmet safety program; Penquis CAP’s Kids Campaign, Car Seat Safety and Maine Care programs and Affiliated Services of St. Joseph Healthcare. For more information, call Mary Ellen Pedersen at 973-3645.

The major fund-raiser of the year for MATS, the Moosehead Arts and Theater Society, reports Libby Collins, is its Art and Craft Fair, slated for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 5, in the Greenville High School gymnasium.

To help make this a profitable undertaking for MATS, your participation is necessary.

If you are one with an interest in the arts, or a craftsperson, and you’d like to participate, you can obtain a registration form or more information by calling Collins at 695-3858, e-mailing her at libbycollins@lycos.com or calling Dee Caswell, 695-3089.

Proceeds from the event fund a MATS scholarship for a GHS senior pursuing an art-related education, provide student field trips to museums and performances, purchase art supplies for Greenville schools and help enhance the arts in that community.
