BANGOR – Have you ever sat at the controls of a helicopter? Ever had an up-close view of a jet engine like the ones on the KC-135 tanker – or an ejection seat from a B-52? The Maine Air Museum is where you can experience those things.
What was Bangor International Airport called in the 1930s? What did an aviation mechanic’s workbench from the same era look like? The museum has answers to those questions.
The museum’s grand opening for the season is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14. The museum will open at 10 a.m. Opening activities include the Passing of the Flag ceremony and a ceremony to honor the first inductees into the Maine Aviation Hall of Fame.
To get to the museum, take I-95 Exit 47, follow signs to Bangor International Airport, then north to 98 Maine Ave.. The museum is on the runway side of the road.
There will be no admission fees on opening day. After that, the suggested donation is $2, $1 children, $5 for a family.
Museum hours are 10 a.m-4 p.m. Saturdays and noon-4 p.m. Sundays. Special arrangements may be made for Saturday group tours. As soon as more volunteers are recruited, museum officials plan to expand the hours the museum is open.
The museum is part of the nonprofit Maine Aviation Historical Society. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month at locations around the state.
