Nominations sought for volunteer awards

BANGOR – Nominations are being accepted for the third 2 Those Who Care Awards, which honors outstanding volunteers in the community. Honorees will be selected in early August. Awards will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Husson College and will be televised as a primetime special on WLBZ 2 later that month.

One person will receive the John W. Coombs Award, a volunteer recognition award of the United Way of Eastern Maine. An outstanding nonprofit organization will be honored with the Agency Distinction Award.

Nomination forms are available by calling WLBZ 2 at (800) 244-6306 or the United Way of Eastern Maine at 941-2800. Nomination forms also are on the Web at WLBZ2.com. The nomination deadline is July 14.

Honorees in 2002 were:

. Mascha Litten and Jeanette Thulin transcribed books into Braille for the blind and visually impaired for 40 years.

. Jeff Austin, a lifelong member of the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department, keeps lifesaving equipment working.

. Lt. Robert Welch of the Bangor Police Department volunteers with Maine Special Olympics, the Soap Box Derby, St. Michael’s Center and the Read for Success Program.

. Alice Wilkinson, volunteer teacher at Robbinston School.

. Ervin “Tiny” Huntington, winner of the 2002 John W. Coombs Award, volunteers as a cook for the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and with Maine Special Olympics and the Pine Tree Camp.

. Penquis Community Action Program was named the 2002 winner of the Agency of Distinction Award.
