WESTFIELD – The Maine Solar System Model will be displayed during its grand opening at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Saturn site in Westfield.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, astronaut Rex J. Walheim, and Planetary Society Director Wesley Huntress will attend.

The ceremony will conclude with a simultaneous rocket launching from each of the model sites.

Volunteers and members from 12 educational institutions were involved in the construction of the largest three-dimensional scale model of the solar system in North America.

The models can be seen along a 40-mile stretch of Route 1, starting with the sun, 49 feet 6 inches in diameter, at the Northern Maine Museum of Science at UMPI, and ending with Pluto, 1 inch in diameter, at the Houlton Information Center.
