This is a big weekend for everyone associated with the two events that benefit the Logan P. Graves Foundation.

First up is the Second Annual Logan P. Graves Foundation Auction from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Presque Isle Country Club, and then it’s the 4th Annual Logan Graves Golf Classic Sunday, June 15, at the same site.

Both events benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program or MCCP, which is a nonprofit organization providing medical care, support services and access to clinical research for children with cancer.

Logan, the son of Bob and Lynne Graves of Presque Isle, died in 1998 at age 6 from a rare form of childhood cancer.

Having benefited from the services of MCCP, Logan’s parents established the foundation in his honor to help others benefit from the same opportunities.

Bob Graves explained that “in building up the tournament, our goal has been to convey the fact that this is not just a local, Sunday afternoon scramble.

“This is a statewide fund-raising event, with the proceeds going to help kids from every corner of the state. We have sponsors from Portland to Ashland in addition to some from Massachusetts.”

The first three tournaments raised more than $135,000 for MCCP.

Last year, with proceeds from the tournament and $7,000 raised at the first foundation auction, more than $50,000 was donated to the MCCP, Graves said.

“We anticipate raising at least that amount again this year,” he added.

If you’re interested in the auction you will find items such as an autographed basketball from the 2001 National Championship Duke Blue Devils, and another by Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski; a 1998 Maine Black Bears hockey jersey signed by late coach Shawn Walsh; and an official NFL football signed by former Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula.

There are tickets for travel and sports events and rounds of golf, as well as prints, gift certificates and golf equipment.

If you want more information about either event or the Logan Graves Foundation, call Lynne Graves at 769-1861.

If you cannot attend either event but would like to help, donations may be sent to the Logan Graves Foundation, P.O. Box 429, Presque Isle 04769-0429.

All donations are tax-deductible.

Judy Butler of Eddington has organized a terrific Bangor Flag Day celebration beginning with the opening ceremony at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, June 14, on the Bangor waterfront.

As promised in an earlier column, she has more complete details about the event.

“We will have activities throughout the afternoon,” she said, including music, dancing and singing. There also will be “an exhibit of old American flags and a miniature of The Wall That Heals,” a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.

While there, you can learn about flag etiquette. Butler said if you have old flags that need to be retired, bring them, and a receptacle will be available.

You also can visit with patriots such as “Betsy Ross, Hannibal Hamlin, Gen. Joshua Chamberlain and his mother, Sarah Chamberlain,” who will be circulating throughout the crowd.

Butler said re-enactors of Gen. Chamberlain’s 20th Maine Regiment will lower the flag around 5 p.m.

She hopes you will “bring chairs and just have a fun day in the park. You can bring a picnic, too, but please no cookouts.

An auction and luncheon to benefit Children’s Miracle Network is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at St. John’s Catholic Church on York Street in Bangor.

Mike Dow of KISS-94 radio’s “Mike and Mike Show” will be the auctioneer.

Proceeds will help provide essential funds for pediatric services for children in northern, central and eastern Maine.

Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 827 of Newburgh is hosting a “Young Eagles” rally for youngsters ages 8 to 17 at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Houlton International Airport.

Youngsters must be accompanied by an adult or another responsible person in order to register. Those registered will enjoy a free flight.

Once the flight is completed, the flier will be an official Young Eagle, and have his or her name entered in the world’s largest logbook at the EAA Safety Foundation Building in Oshkosh, Wis.

For more information, call EAA event coordinator Peter Hurd at 532-2823 or 532-7220.
