JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Charges are piling up against a former Maine couple who filled their home with cats and dogs and stored dozens of pet carcasses in a freezer.
During a court appearance Thursday in Washington County General Sessions Court, the number of animal cruelty charges against Arthur and Lynne Giles more than doubled from 25 to 62.
Animal control officers also filed 31 counts against the couple for failing to comply with the rabies law and 28 counts of inhumane confinement of animals.
Mrs. Giles signed a document giving the Washington County-Johnson City Animal Shelter permission to euthanize or adopt out the animals, many of which are sick.
The couple remained in the Washington County Detention Center with bonds set at $20,000 for the 50-year-old woman and $10,000 for the 64-year-old man.
Judge John Kiener appointed the district public defender’s office to represent Giles and Clifton Corker to represent his wife.
The couple, who pleaded guilty in 1999 to 48 counts of animal cruelty and have a similar record in Winslow, Maine, were arrested Tuesday after police found 25 animals in their house, some in pet carriers without food or water.
