Pandas’ Ham among finalists for Mr. Baseball

ORONO – Jeremy Ham has a chance to become the second player from Lee Academy to win the Dr. John Winkin Mr. Baseball Award symbolic of the outstanding high school senior baseball player in Maine.

Ham has been named one of four finalists for the annual award, which will be presented Friday just before the 12th Maine High School Senior All-Star Baseball Game is played on Mahaney Diamond at the University of Maine. Game time is 7 p.m.

Previous winners of the award include Milwaukee Brewers righthander Matt Kinney of Bangor, last year’s recipient Greg Norton of South Portland, and Steve Coombs of Lee Academy, the 1992 recipient.

Ham, a pitcher and second baseman, batted .404 with 17 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 15 attempts this spring for coach Randy Harris’ Lee Academy club. On the mound, he posted a 4-1 record with a 1.43 earned run average in leading the Pandas to an 11-7 record and a berth in the Eastern Maine Class D semifinals.

Other finalists for the Mr. Baseball award are Ray Vallee of Cony of Augusta, Ross Cantara of Biddeford, and Ryan Baker of Portland.

Vallee, a shortstop and relief pitcher, batted .405 with one home run, five doubles, and 18 RBIs, along with six saves for Cony, which reached the Eastern A semifinals. Vallee will attend the Gunnary Prep School in Connecticut this fall.

Cantara, a shortstop, hit .545 with three home runs, two triples, nine doubles, 16 RBIs, and seven stolen bases for Biddeford. He plans to attend UMaine.

Baker, a catcher, batted .492 with four home runs, four doubles, and 23 RBIs for Portland and is considered among the best catchers in the state.
