Mitchell to promote Irish trade mission

PORTLAND – Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will be joining the Maine International Trade Center on July 7 to promote Gov. John Baldacci’s first gubernatorial trade mission to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In October, Baldacci will be taking business leaders to meet key companies in the growing markets of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Currently Maine exports more than $81 million of products to the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Mitchell, a Democrat from Maine and U.S. Senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995, brokered peace talks that produced the Good Friday Accord between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland in 1998.

An overview of current events and Irish business opportunities will be discussed during a reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. July 7 at the Marriott, Sable Oaks-South Portland. Admission is free to all MITC members and $15 for nonmembers.
