BANGOR – Eastern Maine Technical College faculty members Loring Kydd and Warren Southworth have been granted emeritus status.
Kydd of Deer Isle has been a faculty member and leader at the college for 37 years, since the college’s beginning.
Kydd worked with colleagues to develop marketing to attract women students into a primarily male environment at what was then Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. His efforts led to higher female enrollment in traditional occupational programs. He also helped the college obtain grants for entrepreneurial training and cooperative education.
A strong student advocate, Kydd served for many years on the student senate. He was a long-term member of the machine tool, nursing, medical radiography and building construction program advisory committees, attending every meeting.
Seven years ago, EMTC President Joyce Hedlund asked Kydd to serve as acting academic dean. Kydd was the math-science department chairman for 25 years, and has taught mathematics, computer, physics and surveying courses. He has helped the state develop mathematical problems for the MEA examinations for public school children.
Kydd holds bachelor’s and masters degrees from the University of Maine.
Warren Southworth of Searsport, a 35-year veteran at EMTC, also received emeritus status. He has been a faculty member and leader at the college since 1968, two years after the first classes were held.
Creating excellence in the academic environment has been one of Southworth’s major initiatives. He taught English, oral communication and literature classes. For 26 years, Southworth was a department chairman, first for humanities and recently for English. He served for many years on the academic affairs and program development committee.
