Brewer High School

BREWER – Laura Crosby, a 2002 graduate of Brewer High School, received the Junior Achievement-National Association of Insurance Women Scholarship for $1,000 to help purchase books. Janice Plunkett, a representative of the Greater Portland chapter of the association, and Jennifer Connolly, from Junior Achievement of Maine, presented the award at a luncheon hosted by the Bangor Region Junior Achievement advisory council at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel.

The scholarship is awarded to a high school or college student who has participated in a Junior Achievement class or taught as a Junior Achievement classroom volunteer. The recipient must be enrolled full time in a two- or four-year accredited college and maintain a 2.6 grade-point average.

Crosby, the daughter of Brenda Crosby, is a student at the University of Maine, studying kinesiology and physical education. She volunteered to teach JA in Kaitlin Jewell’s second grade class at Pendleton Street School in Brewer.

“The JA program has given me the opportunity to share my personal knowledge and to help students gain age-appropriate knowledge of economic concepts such as unit production, assembly line production and the purpose of taxes. It was a very positive experience,” Crosby said.

Lewis S. Libby School

MILFORD – Ryan Forsyth led the Pledge of Allegiance and Danielle Richard was class speaker at the Lewis S. Libby School graduation ceremony June 9.

Garrett Agrell and Kaili Davis received Presidential Academic Awards. John Bapst Memorial High School

BANGOR – Althea Wong-Achorn of Amherst, a student at John Bapst Memorial High School, has been selected to attend the Global young Leaders Conference June 15-26 in Washington, D.C., and New York City. The conference is a development program for secondary school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. She will be among 350 outstanding scholars, worldwide, who will attend the conference.

Wong-Achorn is a member of the Junior Classic League, a nationwide group which studies Latin and Greek. She also is a member of the math team. As a student at Airline Community School in Aurora she was a state finalist in the National Geographic Society’s geography bee.

Orono High School

The Class of 1983 is planning a 20-year reunion and family fun day 1-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Camp Molly Molasses in Bradley. Teen Parent Education Program

The Good Samaritan Agency graduated 13 young women from its Teen Parent Education Program June 12. The ceremony took place at Rangeley Hall on the EMTC campus. Dr. Dorothy Freeman, president of the Unity Foundation, was the keynote speaker.

Colleges

Colby College

WATERVILLE – Theresa Leyro was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Colby College. A 2000 graduate of Hampden Academy, she is the daughter of Elvin and Maria Leyro of Hampden.

Tara Studley has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. A 2001 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, she is the daughter of Tirrell and Debra Studley of Veazie.

Colgate University

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Kelli Anne Wong, daughter of Charles Wong of Bangor and Gail LeClair of Bangor, received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University May 18. She also received the U.S. Fulbright Program, Colgate Alumni Corporation 1819 Award and the Thomas J. Watson Foundation award.

Connecticut College

NEW LONDON – Rebecca Schweikert of Bangor was awarded a bachelor’s degree in biology at Connecticut College’s 85th commencement May 18.

Mitchell Peace Scholars

ORONO – Four Maine college students, two each from Maine’s technical colleges and the University of Maine System, will study in Ireland next year as the 2003 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholars. The students, selected for academic and leadership abilities and their commitment to community service, were honored at a luncheon ceremony in Augusta.

The 2003 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholars are:

. Joshua E. Harriman, of Orono, an English major at the University of Maine.

. Michelle D. Tinkham, of Fairfield, a May 2003 graduate of Kennebec Valley Technical College’s liberal studies program.

. Caroline S. Ward, of Winthrop, a May 2003 graduate of Central Maine Technical College’s liberal studies program.

. Diane B. Hoppe, of Whitefield, a student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on agricultural education through communication arts at the University of Maine at Augusta.

Ward will travel to Ireland this fall, while Tinkham, Harriman and Hoppe will go abroad next spring. The students will study at University College Cork or Cork Institute of Technology.

The George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship was created in 1998 as a tribute to Mitchell for his work in helping to facilitate a peace accord for Ireland and Northern Ireland, and his lifelong devotion and commitment to public service.

Iowa State University

AMES, Iowa – Matthew Ring received a degree in electrical and computer engineering at Iowa State University commencement ceremonies May 9-10.

Senate internship

BOSTON – Joshua Yardley, a senior at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been hired for a one-semester internship in the Washington office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. He will work there through Aug. 22.

Yardley, a computer science major, is a graduate of Bangor High School and the son of Shawn and Rita Yardley.

Thomas College

WATERVILLE – Angela Stevens, daughter of Judy and Harold Stevens of Carmel, graduated May 17 with high honors. She received a bachelor’s degree in business management. She is employed by MBNA, where she worked fulltime while attending school.

University of Maine

ORONO – The University of Maine Alumni Association has named Eric Hanson, Class of 2006, the winner of the Alumni Association Tuition Raffle.

The association sponsors the raffle in support of student programs, including Student Academic Travel Awards, Student Alumni Association, Senior Skulls and All Maine Women Honor Societies, and Sophomore Eagles and Owls.

Hanson has completed his first year of study in environmental studies at UMaine. He is the son of William and Linda Hanson of Wiscasset, who graduated from UMaine in 1980 and 1981, respectively.

As winner of the raffle, Hanson will receive 24 paid credit hours to UMaine, a value of $3,500. This is the ninth year the Alumni Association has sponsored the tuition raffle.

Western New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Karen A. Kenneally of Hampden has been named to the President’s List at Western New England College for the spring semester. Kenneally, a senior, is majoring in psychology. Students are named to the President’s List for achieving a semester grade point average of 3.80 or higher.
