ORONO – Western Maine flexed its baseball muscles for one final time Friday night, pounding out a 10-2 victory over the East in the 12th annual Maine High School Senior All-Star Baseball Game at Mahaney Diamond.
Keil Martin of Thornton Academy of Saco led the winners, hitting two doubles and driving home four runs. Martin delivered the game’s key hit, a three-run double in the fourth inning that broke a 1-1 tie and gave the West the lead for keeps.
Andrew Ward of Cheverus of Portland added two hits and scored a pair of runs and was named the West’s Offensive Player of the Game.
A.J. Preble of Skowhegan, who had a triple and two singles, was named the East’s Offensive Player of the Game, while teammate Ray Vallee of Cony of Augusta added two hits.
Earning Defensive Player of the Game honors were Chris Sargent of Class C state champion George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill and Ryan Baker of Portland.
The West now holds a 9-3 lead in the series.
While the teams combined for 24 hits, this all-star offensive show featured an all-or-nothing aspect. East pitchers recorded 18 strikeouts of West batters during the nine-inning game, while West pitchers registered 17 strikeouts. East pitcher Ryan Brown of Old Town struck out four batters in the ninth inning, with one of the batters reaching on a wild pitch.
This was a 1-1 contest through three innings.
Each team scored a run in the second inning. Josh Stroup of Monmouth Academy led off the top of the inning with a single to left for the West. He stole second, went to third on a groundout by Ryan Burke of Greely of Cumberland and scored the first West run as Dustin Spiller of Gorham reached on an infield error.
Sargent reached second on an infield error with one out in the bottom of the inning. A groundout by Ryan Lockard of Waterville moved Sargent to third, and he scored the tying run on an infield single by Matt Gilbert of Messalonskee of Oakland.
The West broke the game open in the top of the fourth, with Martin hitting a three-run double and scoring on a single by 2003 Mr. Baseball Ross Cantara of Biddeford to highlight a four-run rally against East reliever Josh Heath of Bangor.
The West pushed its lead to 8-1 with three runs in the sixth off righthander Bob Webber of Cony. Again Martin had one of the key hits, a double to drive home Ward, who had led off with his second single of the night. Chris Doughty of Cheverus and Peter Carty of Georges Valley of Thomaston added RBI singles to the rally.
The West scored two more runs in the seventh, with RBI doubles by Ryan Bourque of Sanford and Spiller the key blows.
The East struck for its final run in the bottom of the inning. Preble hit a leadoff triple to the left-center field gap – the East’s lone extra-base hit – and scored on a wild pitch.
