Elmira edges Bangor, earns weekend sweep

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Scott Hunter’s double with one out in the ninth inning scored Carlos Rosario from first base to give Elmira a 3-2 victory over the Bangor Lumberjacks in Sunday’s scheduled Northeast League game.

Elmira also beat the Lumberjacks 3-2 in the completion of a game that had been suspended by rain on Saturday.

In Sunday’s second game, Rosario opened the ninth with a single to chase loser Santiago Henry in favor of Donnie Thomas. Thomas got an out before Hunter doubled.

The Lumberjacks squandered a pair of one-run leads supplied by Todd Brock’s third-inning homer and Lorenzo de la Cruz’s eighth-inning fielder’s choice, which scored Brock. Brock had doubled.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Alex Marconi and Ryan Lehr tied it 1-1 in the fourth and Marconi’s sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Brian Jones, who had doubled and gone to third on a balk.

Mike Valdes, Marconi, Lehr and Cleatus Davidson had two hits each for Elmira while Brock had three hits for Bangor and Mo Blakeney had two.

Chris Keelin picked up the win in relief of Dan Head, who allowed one run over six innings.

Tim Rall pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball for Bangor.

In the completion of the suspended game, Elmira overcame a 2-0 deficit with a run in the fourth and two unearned runs in the sixth inning.

In the sixth, an inning-opening error by first baseman Jude Voltz and an error by loser Thomas put runners on second and third with no outs and sacrifice flies by Lehr and Rolando Bello delivered the runs.

Hunter’s solo homer pulled Elmira within 2-1.

Donnie Ross’ two-run homer had staked Bangor to a 2-0 lead in the first.

Hatuey Mendoze picked up the win for Elmira and Chris McGee picked up the save.

Jerry Long, Thomas and Brandon Bowe spaced three hits for Bangor.

Brock was the game’s lone repeat hitter with two singles.
