A Levant man accidentally shot himself in the head Sunday evening, according to Maine State Police.

Trooper Roderick Charette said Brendan Hickey, 21, was handling a handgun at about 7 p.m. at a Townhouse Road residence when it went off, killing him instantly. Charette said the case is still under investigation.

A Holden teenager walked away from a rollover accident in Orono on Monday night.

Mike Tardiff, 16, was driving toward Bangor on Stillwater Avenue in Orono when a hornet flew into his Saab 900 Turbo. He said the hornet flew toward his leg and when he moved to swat it he lost control of the car.

The Saab veered off the right shoulder and cruised along the ditch past a telephone pole on the left, barely missing a large tree on the right before the car hit a driveway, knocked down a steel gatepost, rolled end over end and settled on its windshield. The car stopped about 10 feet from another large tree in its path.

Tardiff, who has had his license for less than a month, seemed to be in good spirits although his knees and hand were skinned. He said he was wearing a seat belt, adding by way of advice, “I’d rather get stung by a hornet than roll over.”

Orono police Sgt. Scott Scripture said it didn’t look like Tardiff had been speeding.

Cocaine and marijuana were found on a drunken driving suspect in Brewer on Sunday night.

Brewer police Sgt. Jason Moffitt said he and Sgt. Perry Antone were on a drunken driving detail just before midnight when Officer Tony Pinette radioed for them to evaluate a possible drunken driver on Silk Street.

Moffitt said the driver, Bruce Perry, 50, of Bradley, showed signs of intoxication and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was arrested for operating while under the influence and taken to Penobscot County Jail.

A search of Perry’s vehicle turned up a usable amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and cocaine. Perry was charged with possession of Schedule W drugs.

A woman was charged with theft Saturday at the Lura Hoit Pool in Hampden.

Hampden police Officer Shawn Devine said Lynn Martin, 26, of Bangor was swimming with her husband and three children, and allegedly stole $98 in tips from a Bangor woman who left her purse in an unlocked locker.

A Bangor man allegedly assaulted his wife Saturday at a trailer park in Hampden. Mayo Hanaber, 41, is accused of shoving and grabbing his wife, from whom he was separated, and then left on his bike, according to Sgt. Dan Stuart.

A background check showed Hannaber had been arrested for assaulting his wife on another occasion and was on probation for assault.

Stuart found him roaming in a park and charged him with assault.
