ROCKLAND – City police believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor Sunday night in the death of a Spruce Head man who crashed his pickup into trees in the Rockland Bog.

Tayt Grout, 33, of Spruce Head was operating his 1998 Dodge pickup when he lost control at the intersection of Bog Road and Mill Street, left the roadway and crashed into trees, Wallace Tower, deputy police chief, said.

Grout was traveling alone. A resident heard the collision and reported the wreck at 9:40 p.m.

“The accident is still under investigation, but we do believe that alcohol was a contributing factor,” Tower said Monday.

Grout was taken by Rockland ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and died of his injuries at the hospital.

Patrolman William Smith investigated the crash. He was assisted by the Rockport Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Department. An officer from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department was called in to conduct an accident reconstruction.
