ROCKPORT – Police are investigating $40,000 in damage to two track excavators which occurred over the weekend.

Vandals poured dirt and gravel into the motors of the Kobelco and Hitachi excavators parked at a job site off Route 17 in West Rockport, department spokesman Craig Cooley said.

The damage was discovered by the owner when he arrived for work Monday. Cooley did not reveal the name of the equipment’s owner.

Patrolman Michael Smith was assigned the investigation.
