BANGOR – As the quarter pole of the American Legion baseball season approaches, Brewer is displaying ample evidence that it is the team to beat in Zone 1.
The unbeaten Falcons used six-innings of three-hit pitching by righthander Pat Moran and a 12-hit attack to rout Bangor 14-3 at Mansfield Stadium on Tuesday night.
The win was the fifth of the season for coach David Morris’ club, and the fourth straight game the Falcons have scored in double figures.
Moran, who will be a junior at Hampden Academy this fall, found that offensive support to be more than sufficient.
He struck out five batters and walked only two in an 87-pitch effort. Only once did Moran face more than four batters in an inning, the second when Bangor pushed across an unearned run as P.J. Dowe reached on an error and scored on a triple by Mike LaRochelle.
“Tonight I didn’t feel like my fastball was getting up there like it usually does, so I had to resort to some of the off-speed stuff and place my fastball better,” he said.
Moran has allowed no earned runs in two Legion starts covering 13 innings so far this season.
“Pat does a great job in changing his pitches up,” Morris said. “A hitter doesn’t see the same thing every time. His changeup is working well and he throws a good curve, and from last year to this year he’s throwing quite a few miles an hour faster.”
Jake Knight and Zac Bouzan-Kaloustian – the top two batters in the Brewer lineup – each had three hits and three RBIs, while No. 3 hitter Jason Harvey went 2-for-5, including a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Not all of Brewer’s offense came from the top of the lineup. Batters in the No. 9 slot in the order, Shawn Sutherland and Andy Wentworth, combined to score four runs.
“We’re fortunate to have 18 guys who really like to play baseball,” Morris said. “It’s really a blue-collar situation. We have some great leadership, and everyone just comes in and make the plays.”
Bangor (2-3) was hurt by four errors, all in the first three innings, as Brewer built an 8-1 lead against Comrades’ starter Josh Heath.
Kevin McAvoy singled home a run to highlight Brewer’s two-run rally in the top of the first, while Knight singled home a run and Bouzan-Kaloustian followed with a two-run double as the Falcons extended their lead to 5-0 in the second.
After Bangor scored once in the bottom of the second, Brewer scored three more runs in the third, then added single runs in the fifth and sixth before Harvey capped off the victory with a home run after Bangor reliever Andy Treadwell walked the bases loaded in the seventh.
Bangor’s final two runs came off Chad Gomm in the bottom of the seventh, with Tyler Jellison singling home one run and the second scoring on a Brian Worster sacrifice fly.
