Some anglers and hunters choose to give up on their golf games and focus on their other passions. For those outdoors enthusiasts who still enjoy swinging the sticks on occasion, there’s an upcoming tournament that may be of interest.

Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association will be the beneficiary of an 18-hole scramble tourney scheduled for Saturday, July 12, at Hampden Country Club. The tournament begins at 7 a.m.

The cost is $25 per person, and teams will consist of four players. All proceeds from the tourney will be turned over to the MYFGA.

Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association was founded by a group of area sportsmen and women in a grass-roots effort to revitalize Maine’s traditional outdoor sporting heritage.

Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association has a clubhouse on Pickerel Pond near Milford, and hosts events there year-round.

Penobscot Fly Fishers to meet

The Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold their monthly dinner meeting July 2 at the Veazie Salmon Club.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken will be served, and guests are encouraged to bring a salad or dessert and beverage.

Speakers at the meeting will be Rep. Matt Dunlap of Old Town and Warden David Georgia. The pair will talk about Maine’s Youth Fish and Game Association.

Penobscot Longrifles plan event

The Penobscot Longrifles will hold their last monthly shoot of the spring season Sunday.

The line shoot begins at 10 a.m. at the club’s site in Stetson.

The cost is $20 for nonmembers and $15 for members. The price includes prizes and lunch.

No shoots will be held in July or August.

Any-deer deadlines set

Deer hunters seeking the option to hunt for does as well as bucks still have time to apply for any-deer permits – commonly called “doe tags” – but shouldn’t delay much longer.

There are two deadlines looming for deer hunters. For those who want to apply for an any-deer permit in person at the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the magic date is July 15.

For those applying online at www.mefishwildlife.com, the deadline is Aug. 1.

There is no fee associated with applying for an any-deer permit.

Applications are limited to one per person, but this year hunters are allowed to apply in three Wildlife Management Districts.

According to the DIF&W Web site, the any-deer permit system has existed for 18 years. Any-deer permits are valid only in a specific Wildlife Management District. A permit-holder can shoot a buck with antlers 3 inches long or longer anywhere in the state, or any deer in the WMD where his or her permit is valid.
