Television commercials produced by the “Think About It” casino political action committee promise jobs and property tax cuts. Although this might prove true, in true partisan fashion they never mention the other side of the story.
We hear nothing about the increases in welfare recipients who squat in Maine after losing all their money, the higher crime rates, the influx of illegal low-wage workers, and the corruption big money and a casino will come with. They wisely avoid the bad news because they know they can’t explain how all of it can or will be managed.
They build a casino and make the money, while we fix the problems. We’ll have to increase taxes to fund more police, police cruisers, road repairs, homeless shelters, welfare handouts, higher insurance, bigger prisons, more government social services, and of course, a new branch of the Maine Department of Justice to investigate organized crime.
They asked us to think about it. We should.
