For the third time in his coaching career, Bangor Lumberjacks manager Kash Beauchamp will fill out the lineup card for a minor league all-star game.
Beauchamp will manage the World team in the July 29 game at La Stade in Quebec City, Quebec. Brockton Rox manager Ed Nottle will head up Team U.S.A. The World team includes the league’s best players born outside the United States.
“Yeah, I guess you could say I have the world in my hands,” said Beauchamp, whose record is 1-1 in two previous stints as Northern League all-star manager. “It’s a loose, fun atmosphere and I try to make it an enjoyable experience first and foremost, but I still try to win those games because I hate to lose. I want to get over .500.”
Beauchamp’s team will include players from Canada, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
“It’s actually going to be fun to fill out an offensive-laden lineup card, for once,” said Beauchamp, taking a good-natured shot at Bangor’s muted offensive output. “There’s nothing more fun than managing one of those games. The only thing better is playing in one.”
Beauchamp knows about that, too. Although he was picked to play in three all-star games during his 12-year minor league career, he was able to play in only one as an injury and call-up to a higher level kept him from playing in the other two.
“I was in the Carolina League All-Star Game in 1984. I went 5-for-5 with two triples, two singles, and a home run,” said Beauchamp, who also drove in five runs on the way to being named the game MVP.
Bangor’s Maine man
One of the most recent signings the Bangor Lumberjacks have made in their flurry of moves the last few days has paid immediate dividends.
After going 1-for-3 with a single in his debut on Saturday, 23-year-old Jay native Edwin Thompson went 3-for-4 with a triple, double, single, and one RBI Sunday.
Thompson was a four-year letterman at Jay (Class of 1999) and was an all-state first team selection during his junior and senior seasons on the Tigers baseball team. His high school career batting average was .509. He attended Howard University before transferring to the University of Maryland.
To make room for Thompson on the 22-man roster, the Lumberjacks placed shortstop Mitsuru Kobayashi on the inactive list. Kobayashi suffered a back injury last week and may require season-ending surgery.
