Augusta teen named in cemetery vandalism

AUGUSTA – Authorities have identified the teenager they allege damaged 100 grave sites in Mount Hope and Forest Grove cemeteries last year.

Shawn Mason, 16, of Augusta is charged with two felony counts of aggravated criminal mischief. He’s scheduled to appear in juvenile court July 17.

The two Winthrop Street cemeteries sustained an estimated $8,000 in damage when the headstones were tipped over on June 29, 2002.

Mason was on probation for a misdemeanor violation at the time of the vandalism, and a DNA profile from the state police crime laboratory led police to him.

He could face detention in either the South Portland or Charleston juvenile center until he’s 21, said Evert Fowle, district attorney for Kennebec County.

Police are still investigating the vandalism because they believe more than one person was involved. They are trying to identify another DNA profile from the evidence gathered at the scene.
