Boy dies from injuries in Topsham fire

TOPSHAM – A fire in Topsham claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy who suffered third-degree burns on more than 80 percent of his body, officials said.

Steven Auvil of Wiscasset was visiting his father, an employee of a business that rented space within Precast Concrete Products of Maine Inc., around 5 p.m. Tuesday when the Main Street building caught fire.

The boy was airlifted to the Shriners’ Burn Center in Boston and died Wednesday at 6:34 a.m. at the hospital, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Employees of local businesses heard the boy’s screams and poured water on him with a garden hose. LifeFlight Air Ambulance of Maine flew the teen by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland and he was later transferred to the Boston burn center. There were no other injuries reported. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the case.
