BANGOR – Teacher Kal Elmore has been selected to participate in the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago this summer. The program brings a select group of art educators from around the country to Chicago for a professionally enriching experience.

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Brent Yorzinksi of Bangor received a bachelor’s degree from Babson College during graduation ceremonies in May.

Colby-Sawyer College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Angela Bull of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Colby-Sawyer College.

Emory University

ATLANTA – Stephanie Jenkins received a bachelor’s degree during commencement ceremonies May 12 at Emory University. She is the daughter of Michael and Patricia Jenkins of Bangor.

Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Matthew Cammack and Brooke Rideout, both of Bangor, have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Johnson & Wales University.

Cammack is majoring in baking and pastry arts, and Rideout is majoring in travel-tourism management.

PRESQUE ISLE – Brad W. Adams of Bradley, Jared D. Weaver of Frankfort, and Brian A. More of Orrington were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Northern Maine Technical College.

Northwestern University

CHICAGO – Kevin Gordon was awarded a master’s degree in law at Northwestern University’s May 18 graduation ceremonies. A graduate of Brewer High School, he is the son of Rendell and Patricia Gordon.

Savannah College of Art and Design

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Andrew Lee of Brewer graduated recently from the Savannah College of Art and Design. He received a fine arts degree in computer art.

St. Michael’s College

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Joshua Philbrook was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at St. Michael’s College. He is the son of Robin and Kaven Philbrook of Hampden.

Simmons College

BOSTON – Catherine Chasse of Bangor, Leah Grant of Bangor and Noelle O’Clair of Hermon have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Simmons College.

University of Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Heather Blier-Alvarez is the recipient of the Melissa Institute Research Award for her work on the study and prevention of school violence. The daughter of Alan and Susan Blier of Hermon, she is a doctoral resident at the University of Florida where she is completing a doctorate in clinical psychology.

University of Maine

ORONO – University of Maine nutritionists are looking for young adults, ages 18 to 24, to participate in a yearlong study of eating habits. If they qualify, participants will receive $40 for their help in a project that will involve phone interviews and mailings of nutrition information.

Individuals interested in the study may call Adrienne White, associate professor in food science and human nutrition, at (888) 328-1223.

Participants will receive nutrition information and be interviewed by phone three times over the course of the year.

Nutritionists know that good eating habits at a young age contribute to a lifetime of good health, but they know little about how young adults make food choices, said White.

“This study will help us understand more about young adult eating patterns so that we can do a better job of designing and implementing nutrition education methods and materials,” she said.

Nellie Hedstrom, nutrition specialist for Cooperative Extension and Kathy Savoie, Extension educator in Cumberland County are project collaborators. They have organized nutrition aides in five counties to help recruit young adults who meet the eligibility guidelines of being low-income.

Maine is one of 10 states participating in the study. The nutritionists hope to recruit 100 young adults from across the state by the end of July.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jill Husson of Glenburn, Katherine Weeks of Hampden and Willow McVeigh of Winterport graduated from the University of Vermont May 18.
