Rockland Breakwater named national historic site

ROCKLAND – The Rockland Breakwater in Rockland Harbor has been added to the National Register of Historic Places along with nine other sites in Maine.

The breakwater is a 4,346-foot-long granite structure that extends from Jameson Point into Rockland Harbor. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers built the breakwater between 1881 and 1900 to protect maritime industries on the coast and to provide a harbor of refuge for coastal traveling vessels.

The Cuckolds Light Station in Southport and the Manana Island Fog Signal on Monhegan Island are two other coastal sites that were added to the register.

The light station marks the entrance to Boothbay Harbor. It was first built in 1892, and a light tower was added in 1907. The fog signal was one of the first fog signal stations in the United States that existed separately from a light station.

The Hathaway Barn in Willimatic and the Bradford Farm Historic District in Patten are two agricultural sites included on the list.

The Hathaway Barn was a family farm built in the early 1880s that is recognized for its progressive architectural design.

The Bradford Farm is one of the largest intact clusters of agricultural buildings in the area. Analysis of the district reveals patterns of settlement in Patten due to changes in lumbering and agricultural trends that fed and supported the town.

The Capt. Joel Whitney House in Phillips was added to the historic register as well. Constructed in 1829, the house is an example of a late Federal frame house built for a successful, early settler.

Other sites added to the register include:

. West Durham Methodist Church, Durham

. Maine Industrial School for Girls (Stevens School), Hallowell

. Captain Nathaniel Stone House, Farmingdale

. Moses Hutchins House, Lovell

Each site listed on the register has been documented, evaluated and considered worthy of preservation and protection as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
