Unity College students facing financial woes will get the chance to supplement their college funds during the school’s “Go Fishing for Scholarships” program.
The event, which will be held at Lake Winnecook (also known as Unity Pond), is set for July 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One tagged fish will be worth four years’ tuition, one fish is worth one year’s tuition, and three others will net the lucky angler a $5,000 scholarship. Another 95 fish will be worth assorted scholarship and mystery prizes.
The catch-and-release event remains loyal to the school’s views on conservation of natural resources, and organizers said giving scholarships away during a fishing tourney was a natural for the school. Nearly 70 percent of the students list fishing as an activity in which they frequently participate.
For students not interested in fishing, a geocaching quest will be held, with the same prizes up for grabs.
Green Lake Association to meet
Each year plenty of folks flock to Green Lake in Dedham and Ellsworth, which enjoys a reputation as one of this area’s cold-water gems.
People interested in the lake may want to make a note of an important date: The annual meeting of the Green Lake Association will be held July 10.
The meeting will be held at the Ellsworth High School auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7.
According to GLA secretary Bradford Adams, a number of issues will be discussed.
The primary speaker will be Valerie Whittier of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Whittier will discuss shoreland zoning.
Susan Terrell will speak briefly about a program at Branch Pond focusing on keeping invasive aquatic plants out of the lake.
Robert Dunlap will discuss Green Lake’s water quality.
While geared toward lake residents, the meeting will provide insight and information on Green Lake to anyone with an interest in the lake, or in Maine lakes in general, Adams said.
Fly fishing conclave a success
A fly-fishing conclave sponsored by FlyFishinginMaine.com in June raised more than $1,500, which was donated to the Saco River Salmon Club and Trout Unlimited’s youth program in Maine.
The event, held June 20-22 at Casey’s Spencer Bay Camps on Moosehead Lake, was attended by nearly 100 fly-fishing enthusiasts from Maine to Montana.
Angler Aaron Walden of Brewer won a new Old Town Predator kayak in a raffle drawing, while Nick Chandler of Topsfield, Mass., won an authentic Gray Ghost tied by Carrie Stevens.
Organizer Dan Tarkinson, publisher of FlyFishinginMaine.com, already is planning a similar conclave next year.
“We are very pleased with the success of our first event,” Tarkinson said. “Everyone I talked with had a wonderful time, learned a lot, and met some great fellow fly fishers. We are really looking forward to making next year’s event bigger and better.”
