MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Anna Grzebien fired a course-record 65 to force a playoff with second-round leader Laura Shanahan-Rowe and then beat Rowe on the second hole to win the 47th New England Women’s Golf Association championship at Newport National Country Club Wednesday.

Grzebien, a native of Narragansett, R.I., who will be a freshman at Duke University in the fall, began the day five shots back of New Hampshire’s Shanahan-Rowe.

Rowe shot a 70 to match Grzebien’s three-day total of 215.

Waterville’s Abby Spector, the first-round leader with a 68, wound up eighth after shooting her second consecutive 80. She finished 13 shots off the pace at 228.

Cape Elizabeth’s Alyssa Hayes shot a 75 for a three-day total of 232 that left her in a tie for 14th place.

Turner’s Emily Allen, the only other Maine woman in the 69-player field on the final day, shot her second straight 83 and finished with a 253. She was 61st.

Massachusetts’ Dana Harrity, who began the day three shots back and tied with Spector for second, shot a 72 for a third-place total of 220.
