Bangor High School

BANGOR – Laura Giorgio, daughter of Frank and Pat Giorgio, a recent graduate of Bangor High School, is one of six students from New England to be selected to attend the New England Camera Conference in Amherst, Mass., July 11-13.

She was recommended for her commitment to photography by teacher Lee Norwood. She will attend the University of Maine in the fall.

Hermon Middle School

HERMON – Linda McLaughlin, a pupil at Hermon Middle School, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. She will join a group of students in Washington, Oct. 20-26, to earn school credit while exploring prominent monuments and institutions.

Students will delve into the characteristics of American leadership in times of national challenge and prosperity. Delegates will participate in small group discussions and exercises to experience first hand how successful leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus and foster change.

McLaughlin was nominated and accepted based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

The program is coordinated by People to People to Ambassador Programs to fulfill the vision Dwight D. Eisenhower had for fostering world citizenship when he founded People to People in 1956.

Scholarship winners

HOLDEN – The Cianbro Charitable Foundation of Pittsfield recently awarded Cianchette Brothers Scholarships to 15 outstanding college students who are employees of Cianbro. Elizabeth Hewett of Holden and Amanda Rollins of Exeter were among those honored at a special reception held recently.

LEVANT – The Levant Historical Society recently awarded its annual scholarship to Levant resident Christine Stokes, a recent graduate of Hermon High School.

Stokes plans to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle where she will major in elementary education.

City of Brewer scholarships

BREWER – Brewer High School graduates Jonathon Breindel, Nicholas Fox and Zachary Lingley each received $500 scholarships sponsored by the city of Brewer.

Breindel, the son of Thomas and Debra Breindel of Dedham, will attend Maine Maritime Academy to study international business.

Fox, the son of Ron and Donna Fox of Brewer, will attend the University of Maine to study business and sports management.

Lingley, the son of Scott and Neta Longley of Orrington, will attend the University of Maine to study political science and business.

Colleges

Bates College

LEWISTON – Eben Sypitkowski of Bangor recently participated in the 2003 Mount David Summit: A Celebration of Student Academic Achievement, the second annual campus-wide exposition of student work at Bates College.

Sypitkowski, a junior environmental studies major, presented a poster titled Economic Feasibility of a Maine North Woods National Park and Preserve. He is a member of the men’s soccer team and participated in last year’s Mount David Summer. The son of Robert and Heidi Sypitkowski of Bangor, he is a 2001 graduate of Bangor High School.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – Lindsey Parsons was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bowdoin College. She is the daughter of Bill and Kimberly Parsons of Hampden.

Bucknell University

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kevin Turner of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bucknell University.

Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass. – Jennifer Minott received a master’s degree in education from Clark University May 18. A graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of Nancy Minott and John Minott of Milford.

Drake University

DES MOINES, Iowa – Angela Warren of Bangor has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship, ranging from $5,000 to $9,000, at Drake University. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and leadership.

Drew University

MADISON, N.J. – Sarah Marquez has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Drew University. A graduate of Orono High School, she is the daughter of Charles and Cathryn Marquez of Orono.

Endicott College

BEVERLY, Mass. – Annie Fitzpatrick graduated from Endicott College May 17. She is the daughter of Mark and Ruth Fitzpatrick of Winterport.

Geneva College

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Jenny Porter of Hermon has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Geneva College.

College of the Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Samantha Kingsbury has been named to the dean’s list at College of the Holy Cross for the spring semester. She is the daughter of Doug and Lisa Kingsbury of Hampden.

Northwood University

MIDLAND, Mich. – John Quirk of Brewer has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Northwood University.

Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Christopher Shepley of Bangor was awarded a master’s degree in science in May from Springfield College.

Katherine Mullen of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

University College at Bangor

BANGOR – An arrangement has been made with Kennebec Valley Community College to offer courses at The University College of Bangor this fall in the Speech and Language Pathology Assisting Program. Onsite and ITV courses will lead associate degrees in speech and language pathology. Graduates may be certified to work as state approved speech and language assistants.

Courses offered at UCB are:

. EDUV 103: Language Development taught on ITV by Dr. John Pettit 7-9:45 p.m. Wednesdays from Bangor at Bangor Hall.

. EDU 101-36: Educating Children with Disabilities, 5:30-8:20 p.m. Mondays.

. EDU 212-36: Introduction to Phonology: Phonetics taught by Elizabeth Dyer 5:30-8:20 p.m. Tuesdays.

. EDU 215-36: Introduction to Audiology: Hearing Impairments, taught by Dr. Amanda Samoluk 4:30-7:20 p.m. Wednesdays.

Western New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Jill Saucier of Holden received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western New England College during commencement ceremonies in May.

Wheaton College

NORTON, Mass. – Abby Weissman of Dedham graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton College May 17. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was awarded the college’s Helen Myers Tate Memorial Prize for Original Verse.

Nicole Pelletier of Bangor graduated magna cum laude.

Rachel Rubin of Bangor graduated magna cum laude.

Named to the dean’s list for the spring semester were Nicole Pelletier, the daughter of Cheryl and Ray Pelletier of Bangor; Rachel Rubin, the daughter of Beryl and Barry Rubin of Bangor; Julie Crotty, the daughter of Nancy and Stephen Crotty of Holden; Casey Lawson, the daughter of Charles Lawson and Katherine Lawson of Holden; and Annamarie Dopheide, the daughter of Jane and Bill Dopheide of Winterport.

Western State College of Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. – John Sklenar, the son of John and Ada Sklenar of Bangor, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Western Sate College of Colorado.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

WORCESTER, Mass. – James Townsend and Matthew Leland, both of Orrington, graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute May 18. Townsend is the son of Allan and Elaine Townsend. Leland is the son of Barry and Tamera Leland.

Board of Higher Education

ORONO – The New England Board of Higher Education has announced that state Rep. Jonathan Thomas of Orono, has been elected chairman of Maine’s delegation to the nonprofit education agency.

The New England Board of Higher Education is a congressionally authorized, interstate agency whose mission is to expand educational opportunity for New Englanders. Each New England state is represented on the 48-member board by eight delegates drawn from academia, private industry and government.

Thomas was appointed as a delegate to the board earlier this year by House Speaker Patrick Colwell. He was elected chairman of Maine’s delegation in June. First elected to the Maine House in 2000, Thomas initiated and helped to secure a $9.6 million bond proposal to benefit his constituency, which includes the flagship University of Maine campus at Orono.

Thomas represented Maine at the National Conference of State Legislatures in 2001.

He is a graduate of the University of Maine, where he served as a Spanish tutor.

Among the board’s programs, the Regional Student Program provides New England residents with a major tuition break at out-of-state public colleges and universities in the six-state New England region if they pursue certain academic programs not offered by their home institutions.

In addition to Thomas, NEBHE’s Maine delegates include: former state Rep. Christina Baker of Bangor; state Sen. Mary R. Cathcart of Orono; Maine Technical College System President John Fitzsimmons; Education Commissioner Susan A. Gendron; Donna Loring, Penobscot Tribal Representative to the Maine State Legislature; James C.Q. Weggler, principal of Carrabec High School in North Anson; and University of Maine System Chancellor Joseph Westphal.
