CARIBOU – An Easton man who allegedly burned the family home and threatened and assaulted his wife last month was indicted Friday by the Aroostook County grand jury.

Kevin A. Rand, 45, is charged with setting the family home on fire after a family dispute. The threatening, which involved a firearm, and assault were reportedly committed against his wife between 7 and 7:30 p.m., before the fire June 15.

Rand was arrested at a friend’s home in Presque Isle on June 23. He surrendered without further incident.

The couple’s three children were not at home at the time.

Rand’s wife had fled their Lamoreau Road home and called police from a neighbor’s residence. She was treated for cuts and bruises at The Aroostook Medical Center at Presque Isle.

Rand left his home on an all-terrain vehicle and was not found for over a week. The ATV was located by police not far from the family home.

Police were en route to the home responding to a domestic dispute complaint when they noticed the house was on fire. Police received the call about 7:45 p.m., and the fire was noticed at 7:55 p.m.

The couple’s home, an attached garage and a vehicle inside the garage were destroyed. Damage was estimated at $60,000.

Fire officials found evidence of an ignitable liquid at the site.

Rand is not a stranger to police. He paid a $400 fine for assault in 1996 and a $200 fine for theft by unauthorized taking last March.
