Crash killed police officer, mother-in-law

TOWNSHIP 24 – A Kennebunk police officer and his mother-in-law were killed Friday in a two-car collision on Route 9 in rural Washington County.

The accident occurred at 2:13 p.m. in a light rain when a minivan driven east by Nancy Underwood, 33, of Arundel was struck by an oncoming car that crossed the center line, said Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Perry.

Underwood’s husband, Peter Underwood, 35, who was a passenger in the front seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, Matilde Currier, 67, of Tamarac, Fla., was ejected from the rear seat of the van and died Friday night at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Perry said.

The Underwoods’ two children, ages 2 and 3, were seated in children’s safety seats in the van’s middle seat and were treated at and released from the hospital, the deputy said. Nancy Underwood suffered a broken arm and bumps and bruises, he added.

The driver of the other car, James Joy, 47, of Fredericksburg, Va., was treated for a broken arm and other injuries at EMMC before being released, Perry said.

His passenger, Beverly Bergeaux, 46, also of Fredericksburg, was in intensive care at the hospital with multiple injuries, Perry said.

EMMC could provide no further information on Bergeaux’s condition as of Sunday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman.

Perry said Maine State Police are reconstructing the accident to determine the cause. He said there were no signs of alcohol or drugs.

The cause remained undetermined as of Sunday afternoon, according to a sheriff’s dispatcher.
