ETNA – A 74-year-old man killed Friday night on Interstate 95 may have suffered a medical problem that caused him to drive off the road at mile marker 164, according to Maine State Police.

Jack Haverly of Etna was pronounced dead at the scene. The only passenger was his wife, Alice Haverly, 75. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries and was listed Sunday in fair condition.

Jack Haverly was driving north at about 8 p.m. when his 1998 Izusu Rodeo left the Interstate. The vehicle appeared to have rolled over several times before landing on its roof in a thick stand of trees in the median. It landed about 30 feet from the southbound lane, Etna Fire Chief Walter Gibbons said Friday.

“We had to mow our own path through the trees just to get there,” Gibbons said. “[The vehicle] looked like it was 5 or 6 feet in the air before it went into the woods.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Etna firefighters were familiar with the Haverlys because they had fought a minor chimney fire at the elderly couple’s home just months before.

“They were just awesome people,” Gibbons said.

Etna fire and rescue workers would like to thank an unidentified physician’s assistant who stopped to help in the rescue. The first one on the scene, he had stabilized the injured woman when Etna crews arrived.
