AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Sutherland helps Brewer earn sweep

BREWER – It made sense for Emery Shute to take a trip to the Heddericg Field mound during the fifth inning of the second game of Saturday’s American Legion doubleheader here.

Waldo’s American Legion coach wanted to talk things out with Wildcat pitcher Nick Arthers, who had a 1-1 count with the bases loaded against Shawn Sutherland of Brewer. Sutherland had already smacked two home runs in the first game, a 12-6 win, and added a two-run blast in the nightcap.

Sutherland didn’t get a hit out of the at-bat, but two pitches later Arthers hit Sutherland, forcing in a run. It could have been worse, considering how well Sutherland and the rest of the Brewer Legion squad hit the ball in the doubleheader. The Falcons won the second game 14-5, which lifts them to 16-1 this summer.

With the exception of last week’s 3-1 loss to Bangor, offense hasn’t been a struggle for Brewer this season. Sutherland went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and eight RBIs in the two games.

It was a breakout effort for the recent Brewer High graduate, who struggled at the plate in his final high school season and earlier this summer.

“I’ve been slumping for probably 20 games now,” he said. “I’m definitely seeing the ball better now in Legion.”

Kevin McAvoy had a similar series, with six RBIs, four runs, and went 3-fot-7, including a homer in each game. The Falcons pounded out 25 hits in two games, including 10 for extra bases.

In the second game, McAvoy hit his second homer of the series in his first at-bat, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Another offensive explosion followed, but the biggest difference from the first game was a solid pitching effort from Falcon starter Kyle Dalton. He scattered six hits, struck out eight and allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings.

He recorded a huge strikeout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, using his fastball to fan Jamie Potvin and end the inning.

Potvin, who was 4-for-4 with a double in the first game, had already singled twice in the second. Dalton opened the inning with two straight walks and then two singles before striking out the side.

“He’s definitely a dominant hitter in this league,” said Dalton, who walked six. “I was thinking about throwing him off-speed junk but I threw about 105 pitches in five innings, so I had to come after him. I was fortunate to get that strikeout.”

Sutherland smacked his third homer of the night in the fourth inning, giving the Falcons a 5-0 lead.

“It was a fastball outside,” he said. “I thought it was a double but it kept carrying. I was just going for base hits but they went over.”

Brewer piled on six runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Kevin Kotredes, who started the second game, hit three singles, drove in two runs and scored three.

Arthers hit a two-run single in the seventh and Kenton Spaulding singled twice.

In the first game, the Falcons got started early, as McAvoy plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the first. Nate Clark walked the first two batters of the second inning, and Sutherland, who was batting eighth, hit his first homer of the evening to drive in three. J.T. Davis doubled and eventually scored on a Zac Bouzan-Kaloustian sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.

Waldo’s Jesse Johnson responded with a two-run double in the third, but Brewer had a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by Sutherland’s second homer. He drove in Marcus Boober, who had singled.

McAvoy hit a two-run shot later in the inning. Bouzan-Kaloustian had doubled just before McAvoy’s homer. Kyle Dalton tripled and scored on an Adam Sheehan groundout.

Waldo’s Devin Potvin hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, and Marcus Quesinberry doubled and scored on a Johnson fielder’s choice in the seventh.

Waldo had to go to a reliever early as starter Clark came out in the second inning with a problem in his right arm. Shute went to Spaulding.

“The pitching’s a bit young,” Shute said. “We don’t make any excuses. They come to play, they work hard, they give you seven innings. I’m pleased.”

Clark pitched the final two innings of the second game, so Shute attributed his early struggles to not enough warm-up time early.

The Wildcats logged a triple play in the third inning. Spaulding gave up two straight singles to lead off the inning, but left fielder Paul Herman caught a fly ball and threw to catcher Devin Potvin, who combined with third baseman John Ellis to get the other two baserunners.
