MONSON – This small town will be swaying Saturday in time to several musical performances on tap for alumni weekend.
The Monson Recreation Committee and the Monson Finnish Farmers’ Club will sponsor an afternoon of folk music from noon to 5 p.m. with performances by The Finnish Four, a group of musicians from Finland who are in Maine to teach Kantele Workshops at the University of Maine; accordionist Veikko Honkala; and Woodsong, a Maine folk group, at Monson Memorial Park located behind the museum.
Tickets for the event are $8 for adults, while children 12 and under are free. Participants should bring their chairs. A chicken barbecue dinner, hamburgers and hot dogs will be on sale, provided by the Monson Recreation Committee.
Other events planned during the day include a grand reopening of the Lake Hebron Artisans showroom and a display of famed Berenice Abbott’s American photography, both located on Main Street.
Also on Saturday, the Monson Historical Society will re-dedicate the bandstand with a variety of activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The society, which adopted the bandstand for its community improvement project, obtained an $1,800 grant to repair the slate roof, install new stairs inside and paint the exterior of the facility.
Free performances scheduled during the rededication include the Community Concert Band, the local group Friends, and the Little Folk Dancers from New Sweden. Brenda Nasberg Jepson of New Sweden will show her latest documentary, made for the Public Broadcasting Service.
The historical society also has arranged for a relative of the late Harry Davis to recite the Gettysburg Address from the bandstand. For many years, Davis gave the address from the bandstand during special holidays. Barbara Fox of Bar Harbor, author of “Lest We Forget Bandstands,” will be on site signing her book from 10 a.m. to noon.
