OLD TOWN – Larry Perkins, who was arrested Friday afternoon for possessing 175 marijuana plants and two pounds of processed marijuana, made bail over the weekend.
Perkins, 46, of Alton and Old Town was charged with trafficking in scheduled drugs, a Class B crime, and cultivation of marijuana, a Class C crime. The charges came after a search of his house on Route 43 in Old Town.
At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, he paid $5,000 in cash to be released on bail. Perkins is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Bangor on Aug. 18 for the charges.
A search of Perkins’ property on July 11 uncovered a substantial marijuana-growing operation, according to police. Police said the street value of the marijuana is estimated to be worth between $200,000 and $250,000. Perkins said in a phone interview Monday that the confiscated plants are only worth around $3,000.
“It’s a lot of crap going on,” Perkins said. “It’s a lot of lies. It’s a violation of my rights of freedom.”
Nine firearms and approximately $1,250 in cash, according to Perkins, was taken into evidence along with two pickup trucks containing plant-growing materials and a John Deere garden ATV.
Perkins, who has lived on the family property in Old Town for 46 years, was taken into custody without incident.
While he is out on bail, Perkins cannot possess any alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or dangerous weapons, which include firearms, Penobscot County Jail officials said. Perkins must also submit to drug tests and searches by any law enforcement officer, if asked, also part of his bail conditions.
Old Town police, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Maine State Police, Penobscot Indian Nation police officers and an agent from the Maine Violent Crimes Task Force executed the search warrant on Perkins’ house.
After the investigation is completed, additional charges may be sought against Perkins, according to police officials.
