PORTLAND – The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a contract to a non-profit company that makes it the regional sponsor of a national health plan.

Martin’s Point Health Care will be Maine and New Hampshire’s regional sponsor of the defense department’s Tricare U.S. Family Health Plan, a nationwide managed care plan serving military retirees and eligible family members of active duty personnel.

The contract is worth an estimated $82 million in its first year and makes the company Maine’s second largest military contractor, after Bath Iron Works.

The U.S. Family Health Plan serves nearly 20,000 members in Maine and New Hampshire.

The company has clinics in Portland, Brunswick, Windham and Portsmouth, N.H. Martin’s Point employs around 400 people and contracts with more than 1,000 health care providers.
