SOUTHWEST HARBOR – The U.S. Coast Guard arrested a Tremont man for operating his boat under the influence of intoxicants, a spokesman said Tuesday.
On Monday, the Coast Guard arrested Richard Higgins, 33, after officers boarded Higgins’ 16-foot fishing vessel, Wide Bride, to check for safety and gear violations, according to Group Southwest Harbor, one of two Coast Guard groups in Maine.
Higgins was boating in the Eastern Way region off Mount Desert Island between the Cranberry Isles and Seal Harbor in Mount Desert.
After finding numerous violations, Officer Jon Collier administered field sobriety and field breathalyzer tests on Higgins, who failed them both, according to the Coast Guard.
Higgins was arrest for OUI and then charged by the Southwest Harbor Police Department on an outstanding Hancock County warrant.
A county dispatcher said Tuesday that Higgins was wanted on a charge of failure to appear on another OUI charge. He remained jailed Tuesday afternoon in Ellsworth.
